Hi all!
This is my first post so please bear with me.. smilewinkgrin
I've sorta gone my own way with treament trying the SCD diet, and then going to a Naturopath. These methods aren't really working as well as they first did, and I'm heavily considering starting Imuran. My Gastro wanted me to take it and I freaked about with allt he symptoms so I explored other avenues before coming back to the thought of Imuran. So I've explored, grass ain't much greener on the other side, and after poking through some of the posts here on the site I've sorta cooled my jets and have a more complete understanding on the drug. I just have one question. After reading about a whole bunch of drugs on the website I'm a little confused, does Imuran take a couple weeks/months to start being effective, or is that Remicide?
Cheers All!

It's a bit of both actually.  Remicade and Imuran both can take months to start up proper.  Most docs will say from 3-6 months is how long it will usually take Imuran to start kicking in.  Mine say 3, but I've seen others on here post that thier doctors say 6, so it really depends...just like Remicade takes a few infusions before you really start to get going too.

Hey Spanznat,
I just want to let you know I completley understand being overwhelmed by all the side effects these med's have. Honestly, when my GI first gave them to me I really wasn't awake...and after waking up seeing an IV in me...well, I felt like the decision was made for me. It my husband!
A few months later I was angry about not really having a choice. I commend you for thinking it out before you do it. Sometimes this time does make things worse though.  After so many choices get taken away from us Crohnies we need time to "digest" the whole disease!
Now, I realize that it was for the best! There are many many people on these med's and Imuran really is one of the oldest and most tested ones.  There is no cure for Crohns but it can be managed. Good Luck to you...and yes it takes awhile for it to kick in. I was sick at first...nausea, and bloated...that went away after about 4 months.

I have to reply because i wanted to say, hey spaz, just had to say that, now for your concerns, I too was frieked when I was told to start immuran and pred. I've never been on meds like that evan tho I've had cd for 40 years, 30 years was remission from several surgeries, I call them surgically indusded remission, now stating in oct of 09 I had a heat exhaustion episode and that caused huge flare that forced out of the work force (i'm 60) applied for ssdi, denied first time (normal) Immuran did only but gave me really bad kidney issues within 1 month of taking it and my gi said stop immediately, now I'm onto remicade with better results, took ny acid reflux almost away, 1 or 2 pills a week compared to 2 aday. I get flu like symptoms as well about 2 days after infusion, but I've noticed it wears off within 3 weeks so I took myself off pred because I wanted to tell if rem works so my gi switched me to vicodin instead of pred. so I use that as needed. I hated immuran it caused thin skin and bruising really easy and if I cut myself the sores never healed, the kidney thing was the worst, i still suffer from it. I was equally firked about rem as well but I had to go that route. I also have cd inthroat and mouth so rem has helped that as well. rem usually takes effect right away, I'm on my 3rd loading dose. good luck to you. only kidding about your handle, it's cute
