I don’t use meds but there are some caveats before going the natural route. First of all I am very skeptical of allergy tests. In my case they were not accurate at all, telling me I was allergic to broccoli and that I was fine with shell fish.
Instead start a food diary. This is how many long-term veterans of this disease maintain remission, along with meds of course. The following is a beautiful example:
(Who knew) that eating a plum could make me so sick. I have been waking up at 1:30 am having to run to the bathroom and not being able to get back to sleep because my stomach was so upset for about a week now. Finally put two and two together and figured out it was the plums. I didn't eat the peel either.
It is so wierd how my diet has changed since my kidney surgery. Its like I am having to figure out my diet all over again. Oh well, trial and error I guess.
Yesterday was my birthday and I spent most of it on the couch with my heating pad. Didn't eat anymore plums starting yesterday, and today I feel much better. Geesh, guess I should start a food diary again. Hugs!
If you are going to quit meds then you should at least have some natural fire extinguishers available to snuff out the beginnings of a flare that may develop. Look up Boswellia, E. Coli Nissle, Vitamin D, Saccharomyces Boulardii, turmeric, powdered psyllium seed, and VSL#3. These have been researched and shown to be effective along with mesalamines for maintaining remission of IBD.
59 y/o male. DX ulcerative colitis Feb08, possible Crohn's colitis DX March 2010.
No Meds, allergic to Mesalamine. Allergy to shellfish contributed to 1st major flare.
Watch diet to maintain remission. Boswellia and psyllium seeds especially helpful.
E. Coli Nissle (Mutaflor), turmeric, fish oil, S. Boulardii, VSL3, resveratrol, multivitamin, extra D3, K2, C, high gamma E, magnesium, DGL, phosphatityl choline, glutamine. Copious amounts of fruit and vegetables, no soda, no HFCS, no trans fat, tea instead of coffee, very few processed foods, no carrageenan.Nature created all of the locks, therefore Nature has all of the keys
