I'm a 35 year old crohns patient with RA as well. I am currently on Imuran and Humira on a regular basis as well as prednison occassionally. I'm also a competitive athlete in triathlons hoping to become world class.
As an athlete and crohns patient I have a a pretty good feel for my body, as do many of you. I had been doing very well for a number of years on a combination of medications and natural products. (vitamins, minerals, probiotics, etc.) This year however has been a little tough with the crohns.
I'm not in dire straits or in tons of pain like many of you, but it has become something of a problem. Essentially I am dealing with a bowel obstruction every 2-3 weeks now. It's kinda cool in the sense that I can massage my belly and get the obsruction to move through and my gut will make all kinds of noise. But the nasty feeling and pain take away the novelty of it pretty fast.
Typically I take 10-20mg of pred when I feel an obstruction starting and that takes care of it...but I am left with a very sore stomach for a couple days. It certainly makes work tough and working out near impossible. Sometimes I suck it up and go run anyway...but the feeling of my guts shaking isn't cool at all. I am very fortunate in that I don't have the typical D that most crohns patients have.
Anyway, the Humira works great on the RA, but I am not terribly convinced a bigger dose is going to impact the crohns. That is what my doc is currently recommending.
I'm curious...what are other folks doing to keep things under control? I know I could go on a bigger dose of prednisone and probably get this under control. I don't tend to have side-effects, but it is a dangerous drug. I'm open to looking at anything...natural or medical. My doc is pretty open so I'll run it passed him first.
