I'm concerned.......the other day I ate some grapes.  Great big purple seedless grapes that were wonderful.  But the next day I was feeling pain in my gut and the D was back.  Evidently I wasn't able to digest the skin.  Does this mean the disease just got a little worse?  Or that I just made a stupid food choice and need to eliminate grapes from my diet?  In other words, do the choices I make in food cause this disease to advance?

Personally I can't eat any fresh fruit or veg, but I have had 3 resections. Even without the resections though the skin on grapes and some other foods are hard to digest and probably should be avoided, especially if you are flaring. It isn't going to advance the disease but it will cause already inflamed areas to act up. Its like taking sandpaper to road rash.

Managing with strict low residue diet, keeping symptoms to a minimum. All test show small amount of ulceration, still have occasional blockages. But still have a great time with my 2 daughters and husband!

I also have a hard time eating fresh fruits and veggies, but sometimes I can't resist so will eat them knowing I will pay the consequences. I don't have a lot of self control... rolleyes

My down fall is fresh tomatoes...I absolutely love them! Fresh out of the garden with a little salt and pepper! Yummm!! One of the things that I have learned is to peel the skin off everything first. The skin is the hardest part for your body to digest. Next time, try peeling the skin off, or suck as much of the meat and juice out and spitting out the skin. Maybe you will be able to tolerate them that way.

Also, sometimes the thing you tolerate one day, you will not be able to tolerate the next.

What are these "fresh fruits and vege-tables" you refer to? smilewinkgrin

I can't eat any of that myself, including onions in any form.  I love onions cooked into some foods.  This sucks.  Me personally, I have been afraid of grapes, thinking some melons might be ok, except I don't like cantaloupe or honeydew.  I eat lots of bananas.  I think it's a lot like Zanne said.

I have a simple rule.....If it taste good, spit it out, you can't have it...

If we would read the secret history of our enemies,we would find in each mans life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.

Yr just like me. I love grapes but I just can't eat them. It applies to other fruit as well, like bananas, God knows why? I can't have anything that has been anywhere near them yellow bendies. I had a nanna juice this morning. Full of goodness. No preservatives, just vitamins and minerals. The minute I gulped the last of it I started feeling pain, discomfort and nausea that lasted about the whole day.
As Sniper put it - If it taste good, spit it out, you can't have it...Grrrrr

So eating the wrong foods doesn't cause the disease to get worse?   It just makes me feel like crap (pun intended) for awhile?

I love bananas and they seem to like me.  Veggies - I'm still trying to figure out which ones I can tolerate.  Had a salad the other night with no problems after.  That was nice!

Our ailment is so subjective, it defies generalizations of all sorts. The answer to your question really depends on how you define making the disease worse, and also on your own body's response.

If you define making the disease worse as an increase in the severity of symptoms, then eating "bad" foods obviously makes it worse, otherwise they wouldn't be bad foods. If you define it as causing irreparable damage to your intestines, then it's difficult to say. If it makes you bleed, it's probably doing long term damage. If its just some D, you're probably safe with the occasional slipup/guilty pleasure.

For me, the foods I can and cannot eat change so arbitrarily (except for a few constant bad foods like caffeine and milk) that I've given up trying to appease the almighty C. If I can't eat what I want, within reason, then my treatment isn't working and needs to be changed.
Diagnosed with Crohn's late December 2004. Currently in a clinical trial for Vedolizumab, which seems to be helping.

Thanks for the responses. Having this disease is still pretty new to me and so much of it just does not make sense!!
I'm glad you're all here..........well not really since that means you've got it too.....but you know what I mean. :)
