I had my regular C-scope yesterday and got a clean report. Sort of. After I got home I started to think about one of the findings and now I don't understand it, and of course my doctor doesn't work on Fridays. So I'm coming to the experts.

Single healed fissure/fistula opening in the distal rectum

I had fissures and fistulas when I was first diagnosed (22 years ago) and I have had a recto/vag fistula (7+ years) that has never been officially found by a doctor but still causes leakage but no pain any more. I have had more colonoscopies than I can count, and not once has this notation been documented. Does anyone know if it is likely that it is the original fissures that the doctor saw or could it be something newer? I have times when I have a lot of bleeding and pain, but I knew I had some active disease and skin tags so I just dealt with it now I'm wondering if it was something more.

I think you will have to get your doc to answer the question about whether it is "old" or relatively new. I'm not sure he would be able to tell by the appearance but he might. If he has done multiple scopes on you then I would think he could tell you if it's new since your last scope.

It could be that others saw it but didn't think it was worth noting. Or it could be new since your last scope.

He should be able to look back at reports and tell if this is new or just where the fistula was a long time ago. If it's something he comments on every colonoscopy, I'd think it's there and there's scar tissue, but not an active fistula. I had some rectal involvement when I was first diagnosed, and it shows on the colonoscopy as an abnormality in the tissue, but it is not changing or causing new symptoms, and biopsies confirm there is no active disease there. Hopefully this is the case with you!

I had my first scope since surgery in June today.. and of course he left me trying to figure out what "single apthous erosion" means...  I should meet with next week to go over all my results.

I googled it and didn't get much clarification... i hate not knowing though! smhair

I'm kinda in the same dilema. My scope showed moderate to severe cd in the ileum and sigmoid, but it also showed
kryptitis and kryptic abcesses which when I researched it, is usually found in UC. Oh well!!

zanne I don't have anything to add but am suffering with blockages like you as well, but do you take anything for pain when you have those blockages, I call them gas blockages, because nothing can pass thru, but when gas does finally get thru, I no the swelling has subsided, BUT darn those are excruciating. I know women are tougher than men to be sure, but that pain is bad, feels like i want to give birth out my butt. I have to take pain med's, I'm just curious, but you do sound like a tough cookie, more than likely tougher than me, I use to be.

An apthous erosion is a crater-like ulceration. The apthous appearance is common in CD.

As for the healed fistula, it may be that the light hit it at the right angle and that it is a remnant from your long-ago fistula. Not every GI notes every detailed finding on each scope, so it could have been there for some time and not been remarkable enough for past scopes to highlight.
