I have always known that I am 5 or 6 hours away from being admitted to the hospital at any given moment and so I keep a bag ready with some basic essentials at all times. I can go years with out ever needing it, but I know that I could wake up feeling great and two hours later a blockage could hit and BAM, I need to go to the ER and be admitted. Because my mother also had CD and we both sewed all out lives I have a collection of hospital johnies. They are softer, prettier and most important, they have a row of snap tape running down the back, so no exposure. I have summer weight and flannel winter weight ones. Once a year or so I go through everything and wash it all, so it is clean and good to go.

So my hospital bag has:

a couple of johnies
a couple of pillow cases (colors that make my skin look healthy, florals)
small bag of toiletries (hand cream, face moisturizer, chapstick, toothbrush and paste, nail clippers....)
tissues
wet wipes
small roll of soft TP
comfy socks
slippers
Note pad/pencil

This way if I have to go, I can just grab a couple of books or magazines, my pillow and be all set.

What do others do? Do you have a bag all packed, pack one if you need it, or just let the hospital supple what you need and deal with it.

Clearly I have not been feeling well lately and am afraid I will be using my little bag of tricks, so it got me wondering. What everyone has, what they wish they had and what we could learn from each other.

I didn't even know you can get your own Johnnies! That's such a great idea because they are so huge on me!
I spent a week at the Lahey Clinic and they were kind enough to find me smaller ones.

I don't have a full bag all made up and ready to go, but do have a shower kit that is pretty much ready to go just in case. The only other item I keep up to date like that is my med list. Hugs!

I am my hubby's hospital bag. I take him to the ER, and if he is admitted, I pack everything he needs and bring it in. He needs his electronics - ipod, laptop, kindle, phone to give him distractions, and noise canceling headphones to help him sleep through the hospital noise and shift changes. I put a little fridge and microwave in his room for food. I also bring in pillows, his pyjamas, a robe (both a thin cotton one, and a thick fleece one), house slippers, his toilet stuff (toilet paper, tucks wipes, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, shampoo, lotion, hand lotion, shaving supplies), all his vitamins and meds packed into individual day containers, and food (boost/ensure drinks, yogurt, vsl3), plastic silverware, paper plates and cups. I also get him some books and a spare set of reading glasses. I also take a down throw, for in case he gets cold - for some reason in hospitals, pillows and blankets are always in short supply. I also take a foldable shelf that can hold all these things in an organized fashion and set it up in a corner of the room.

It's like I'm moving him - it takes me several trips to get everything in. I know it sounds like a lot - but having all the comforts of home mostly available to him really helps him keep his spirits up (not to mention having more distractions).

Yes indeed I do - working on the premise that I won't need it if it is ready and waiting ;)

Apart from the toilet bag, Pjs and comfy coming home clothes ... I also have:

precis of my medical history and list of meds I am on (saves time and energy)
small bedside clock
pen and paper
walkman with headphones
good book I haven't read
some change (to buy newpapers from the cart that comes round as I recover)
wine biscuits (1st food after obstruction)
lemon squash (to make the water taste better)
jandals or flip flops for hospital bathrooms
hairdryer so when i go home i don't scare the kids ;)
