I know alcohol upsets Crohn's symptoms, but am curious how much others drink....

I can't drink....I have tried to enjoy a cooler every now and then but it seems to cramp me up big time....I am also in a flare so that does not help at all. I hope by summer I can sip a little without it causing me a problem but I am not holding my breath on that one.

I no longer drink either. Just doesn't agree with me anymore, as well as its not a good mix with my meds. Hugs!

I have never found that alcohol affects me one way or another.

However, this is a question I have a problem with on all doctors forms and everywhere you encounter it. I drink socially, one or two drinks, if I am in the mood and if I am at a party or event. It works out to about 20 drinks a year. There are no options for that. During my most recent admission to the hospital for surgery, the nurse grilled me. So how many drinks a week is that? Ok how many every 2 weeks? A month? She wouldn't just take I drink infrequently as an answer even when I gave her a number. I might have 8 drinks in one month then go 3 or 4 months without drinking again, so how do you average that out?

I agree Zanne that is a tough question to answer on the questionnaire. I know that excessive drinking and crohns don't work well but there is the occasion that I would have my fair share and then not drink for awhile....

I will have an occasional glass of wine, but only when I'm feeling great. If my gut is in any kind of distress, mild or worse, wine absolutely will not go down.

I voted no, because I very rarely drink, and even then only a little at a time. I simply can't stomach it anymore.

I used to enjoy bloody mary, but booze and myself doesn't mix. I contacted hep c from blood trans. back in 1970, and I just never had desire to drink. don't know if subconsciencely, liver told me not to like liquor. I don't really like taste as well. don't evan like smell of beer or wine. when I have had a drink, it doesn't bother stomach at all, it's the taste

I almost never drink. Wine is a never for me, it goes right through me. Being a diabetic I try not to drink, but occasionally I will cheat and have one or two. Bad experience once with too much to drink and it made my sugar drop too quickly and I had a seizure so no more then 2 at one time.

I have been very scared to drink anything at all in fear that i might irritate my stomach but recently I asked my DR if it would be ok to have a glass of wine and he said yes.... one glass every so often....... so i poured myself a nice glass of wine and i actually didnt get sick.... i was very happy but since mixing with meds isnt a good idea i wont have another for a very long time...

You all might laugh, and I'm sure the negative crowd will want to weigh in, but I have found that my 2 glasses of S. American red wine actually helps keep me more regular. If I go without for a couple days things really speed up down there. Maybe it's because the S. American reds are loaded with resveratrol-who knows but if it works for me.......

I found that certain types of alcoholic beverages don't agree with me. Red wine caused problems long before I was diagnosed. I enjoy having a cocktail if out for dinner. I was more concerned about the effects of drinking while taking Imuran. Now I'm off of it and have no negativ e side effects with the occasional cocktail.

I believe I 2 seem 2 have the same views on the bottle as all of ya,,I voted not at all cause I can't remember the last time I had a drink,,and when u go in the hospital 4 admission or tests and they ask the drinking questions like even if i was a full blown alcoholic i'm not gonna proudly raise my hand and say i start drinking as soon as i open my eyes in the morning and pass out the same every evening with a huge beer bong strapped 2 my face with duct tape,,but the very next time I'm asked I'm gonna say exactly that lol there will be a lot of OMG said that day under there breath hell at least it will give them something 2 talk about 4 the rest of the day,,oh they were going 2 talk about u anyway but know they can so much more drama 2 it so by the time the night shift nurses come on god only knows wut will be added 2 your invisible drinking problems give it a try someday,,,I could drink back in the day b4 my disease got this bad I always started with beer than what ever was there I would give it a try but always straight liquor cause pop and juice make me sick and in the end it always tastes like water anyways OMG did she just say that lol...I think trying things in moderation is fine as long as it does not affect your body in any negative way..  ~~CHEERS~~ idea nono idea

I'm another with liver issues so, nope, no alcohol for me...even a very small sip and it get my feet and hands itching (which is a sign that my liver is NOT happy)
But even before, it would upset the crohn's a bit if I did more than 2...

Nope no alcohol for me either, slowed me down as an athlete way too much (I could tell the difference running for three days after one drink), even before crohns. Now with crohn's even a tspn makes my illness worse, and with MTX it is just not smart for me.

400 views and 30 votes? Was hoping to get a better sampling... However the responses I've gotten are close to what I expected... I actually thought there'd be more 'None' responses though. I agree with the post about this question at the doctors office, as what I do from one week to the next varies greatly and the choices I have up there don't reflect that. However if you have a glass of wine once a month I suppose that would go into the 1-2 a week category. I guess there should be a choice to reflect that category between the none and the 1-2 a week.

This result is interesting.
I would also be interested in "What did you used to drink?". I was a partier when I was younger and I have always kind of wondered if that has anything to do with this DD.

I tell my wife when I look back at my life I have hve had an average amount of booze. The difference with me is I had too much whnen I was young, and virtually none now...

I've always thought that Crohn's is caused by a genetic predisposition triggered by an environmental factor, which may vary for everyone. I think it's safe to say that Alcohol didn't trigger my Crohn's, seeing as how I was diagnosed at 16 and didn't have my first drink until several weeks after my 21st birthday. What can I say, I've never been a partier.

I haven't had a drink since 1999 (sigh), because I'm extra-careful with both my CD and my liver (since I'm on 6MP and my family has a history of liver cancer). But my doctor recently told me that it wouldn't hurt me to have an occasional drink. I'm still waiting for the right occasion--after 12 years, it had better be something really special!

If I feel okay, I have no issues drinking alcohol. Or at least I haven't found a type that doesn't agree with me. I'm actually a big fan of cocktails ;)

I have more issues with carbonated beverages than hard liquor. Weird, huh? I gave up anything carbonated years ago and feel much better without it.

There isn't a X amt of times I drink, though. I'm a social drinker. I rarely open a bottle of wine just to drink with dinner but am the first to order something when out with friends.

I drink rarely. If I have a couple of drinks every now and then, it doesn't seem to bother me.
Nothing heavy though. Maybe a glass of wine, or the occasional margarita :)

I hardly drink at all but when I do, my drink of choice...is beer.  That is right..a drink made from wheat which is evil to us.  I have to say I have never found that alcohol affects my CD.  The only thing I find is that when I drink too much beer, the next day I am gassy but that is normal for anyone drinking too much beer.  I don't feel that way after liquor or wine.

I think because it is a liquid it is absorbed differently therfore not playing an impact on the CD.  With food the intestines have to work hard but with liquid, it moves along easily.

beer doesnt sit well with me anymore. no more than one. makes me bloated and can do a number on the bowels the next morning. so i have to remember to take probiotics whenever i drink, but especially when i have a beer, so to avoid things being loose the next morning. i seem to be good with wine and liquor. no more than 2 though and only socially, so keep it to a minimum and i seem to be fine.
