Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with Crohns disease and my doctor has prescribed a 6 week course of Prednisolone steroids. I will be taking 30mg for 2 weeks, followed by 20mg for 2 weeks and then 10mg for 2 weeks. After reading about side effects etc i am a bit worried about taking them and was wondering if anyone else has been on a similar treatment plan? Also, do you think that i will be okay just stopping the Prednisolone after the 6 weeks with the lowest dose being 10mg? Sorry if this sort of question has already been asked, i had a quick look but couldn't find anything!

Thanks :o)

Prednisone is one of the best meds to quiet down the inflammation of a flare with Crohns.

Yes there are some side effects, but those of us with longterm Crohns generally consider it a necessary evil. I have no problem taking it when I need it. The biggest side effects I have had is some insomnia if I didn't take it early enough in the day, really hungry, and some joint pain (not bad) when I first start tapering down. Good luck!

What Nanners said. That seems like a normal tapering schedule, and my doc always stops at 10mg as the lowest dose for 1-2 weeks then that's it.

In my case, I find that the REALLY HUNGRY kicks in first - before the inflammation is under control - and I have no self control over this new found appetite and I eat too much disagreeable food and throw up on day 2 or 3. After that, it's smooth sailing!

Pred use is very common here. No one like having to take it but when the alternative is suffering, it's usually welcome. For me, I figure it is quality of life now, versus potential risks and problems later. Just gotta do what I can to keep going.
