Tests showed I am iron deficient and doctor put me on iron with vitamin C. I've only been taking a few days. How long does it take to get iron levels back up and start feeling improved energy?

my iron was so low I couldn't believe it.. something like 6. I've been taking Solgar Gentle Iron 25mgs for over 6 months now. Regular iron pills can make you constipated or inflamed and have been known to irritate some Crohn's patients but I haven't had any ill effects from this Solgar gentle iron.

How long it takes must be a really long time because I've been taking these for many months first a few a week now everyday because I have an operation coming up and I don't want to be this anemic for it. The actual iron in my blood went up above normal levels but my ferritin which is the more important number was still very low in me. I should also mention that I get a B12 shot every month so that isn't the cause of my anemia.

It took me about 6 months of double dose ferrous sulfate to get my iron levels back up. I had to build up ferritin from a very low number, too. But it did get done, and then I stopped taking it because it bothers my gut. But now I'm anemic again, so back on the ferrous sulfate. I hope I haven't let my ferritin get too low; I'll hear about my last blood test on Friday when I see my GP.

Improved energy for me just took a couple of weeks. I hope you're feeling better soon.

Seriously I am the queen of anemia!!!! Been battling it for a long time. Having surgery because my gut won't stop bleeding. I started with pills, can not tolerate them. Then the iron shots, lots of them and was not absorbing it fast enough, then a few blood transfusions, now having iron infusions.

It takes a while to bring it up, but taking the Vitamin C helps the iron to absorb, so make sure you do that. Try to eat green veggies and red meat. Good luck!

My daughter did OK on one Solgar pill a day (25 mg) for months, but didn't really gain any traction until she went up to two a day (50 mg).  That did the trick and boosted her iron significantly within just a few weeks.
