Hi!

I would love some feedback on Imuran.

Are you on Imuran?

Is it working?

And, what are the side-effects?  Anything I should know before going on it?

I will be starting soon. I was on it years ago and it did nothing.

THANKS!

I was on it for about a year. I had to take two breaks while on it because my wbc had dropped too low. The 2nd time it happened we decided to just stop it. While I was on it I was throwing up every morning and nauseous all day, and my stomach hurt a lot. When I stopped it that all went away. I was on 50mg and 75mg. It didn't really help me much, but it has helped others.

Well, I have been on azathioprine (Imuran) for 6 months now. It started to kick in after 3 months. You have to be patient enough. I take 175mg as I have put on 10 kilograms because of pred. My dose is divided as follows: 2 and a half tablets in the morning and one tablet at night. At the beginning, I didn't suffer from any nausea but now I do and don't dare stopping it. I have to take it along with Salofalk. The most important thing is that once it started kicking in, I felt great till I relapsed again.
Take care!

I tried Imuran and it caused too much nausea for "me", but switched to 6mp and started taking it at night and had much better luck. We have members who have been successfully maintained on either 6mp or Imuran for over 10 years or more. If you are patient the side effects if any will diminish in a couple of weeks. Good luck!

I have been on Imuran for many years (check out signature block). I was in remission due to Imuran for 12 years. I had flare last year and now Imuran with Humira are working together for me.

Only side effects for me: nausia when my imuran was increased last year from 75 to 100 and then 100 to 150 mg. that went away with time.

Took a few months to work, so be patient.

Others experience hair loss- I have not to date.

In all, Imuran was and is a miracle drug for me.

DX with Crohns in 1998 at age 20
Experienced stroke, clotting, seizures, internal bleeding, fissures & an abcess requiring surgery in 1998
Started 75mg Imuran shortly after DX (+ vits) then I was in remission for almost 12 years until Feb 2010 when had major flare for 9 mths

NOW: feeling great, whew, other than a few body aches, still taking Imuran (150mg now) & Humira (since Oct 18/10)

Imuran and 6mp are basically the same med. I have been on 6mp for about 10 years with good results and no side effects. I would guess that at least 90% of patients who take this drug have no serious issues with it and that it is helpful as a manintenance med for almost all.

I am really appreciating this FEEDBACK a lot! I have been on every medication possible and it has either not worked or I have gotten severe side effects from it! THANKS! Please keep the feedback coming.

I tried Imuran @ 8 years ago. I could not stay on it. Severe reactions to it and was hospitalized. My reactions were severe joint pains and it just hurt to touch any part of my body. Oh and difficulty when walking. Good luck!

I have been on 6MP for about 13 years now. Before that I was hitting the operating room every couple of years for a resection. 6MP in combination with other drugs has helped me live a relatively normal life, with no side effects.

You do need to make sure you keep up with your blood work and make sure that you are at a therapeutic level, but it can be a really good drug to help maintain remission.
