Anybody here have much experience fundraising for Crohn's? I see the Get Your Guts in Gear bike ride requires raising $1800 and that seems like a lot to raise. I imagine my gastro clinic might donate some money, but probably not much. Even after asking friends and rels I can't imagine coming anywhere near that amount.

Nanners - that rule is a sub-bullet under "no advertising, links to advertising, or spam". We can't discuss how to raise money?

No fundraising is allowed on the forum at all. Sorry I don't make the rules, these are Peter Waite the forum administrators rules, I am just required to enforce them.

I actually "think" you could discuss what you did to fundraise, but you cannot solicite funds from anyone on the forum. I will ask to make sure. Hugs!

Update:  I did check with some other forum moderators and they believe its okay to discuss fundraising methods, but you are NOT allowed to solicite funds from the members of any of the forums.  Thanks!

Between Facebook and my Christmas card list I was able to raise 4 times that amount for CCFA's Team Challenge (1/2 marathon) last December.

You'd be surprised the amount of support that is out there through friends (who may have family members/friends with IBD) and family who amazingly donate more than you'd every expect!!

I hope you think about it...it's an amazing experience!

Last year for the CCFA Take Steps Walk I made purple ribbon soaps. Posted a couple flyers up at work and ended up making over $600. I didn't set a price for the soaps, I just gave one to anyone who donated. I haven't decided on what to do this year yet, my walk is on June 12th. My boyfriend is also a graphic designer and he made us some amazing shirts to wear to the walk, and he was asked by several people if he would sell them...maybe we'll do that this year.

Sweet, thanks for checking Nanners! I asked some other people and one said she gets a lot of money from a donation jar on her desk at work. Another holds sales in her neighborhood. Thanks for the ideas and please feel free to submit more!

I do fundraising for the CCFA take steps. I have found face book to be an excellent place to do fundraising. Also I have had family members do 50/50 raffels at there work were they had two winners one person would get 50 percent of money and one person would get the tax write off. That has also been very successful for me. Last year I think I raised $1200 in 4 weeks of fundraising. (I had just been diagnosed with Crohn's in Late April early May and the walk was in June) so that could have played a part of peoples willingness as well.

GDen, regarding your original post, I can't believe they stipulate how much you have to raise for them. Surely it's better for them to have 1000 people each donating a dollar than to have one person donating $500.

Beggars can't be choosers and all that...

Here are some fundraising events in Aus to help you with ideas.

You can also find a fundraising kit on their website - just go to the bottom of their home page.

I've no idea what's in it; haven't looked myself; but it may contain something of interest to you.

I'm on the planning committee for my local Take Steps Walk and some of the suggestions they give people are:

Bake Sales

Yard Sales

Get restaurants, etc. to donate gift cards and raffle them off

Facebook is a big one they are pushing now

Dress Down Days (get your work to allow employees to wear jeans on a Friday if they donate $1 or $5)

Mobiles - don't know what else to call these, but that's what the Arthritis Foundation calls them...the little shamrocks or feet or whatever other shape that you can pay $1 for at a store and write your name on it and hang it on the wall or the counter of the store

Company match - some companies will match what you contribute

Car washes (like high schools always do for fundraising)

I know there was more, but I've got to get back to work...

I have raised money for a few causes, and also ran the CCFA Crohn's & Colitis Half Marathon. If you have a website you can customize it, send people the link and they can donate online. It was great for me because 1) I had wanted to run a half marathon and 2) I was raising money for Crohn's so it forced me to tell people my story, rather than continuing on with my lame excuse of "stomach problems''. It outed me as a Crohn's patient! :) I was very surprised at the generosity, I think we had to raise $3500 and people were coming out of the woodwork to donate - I sent out a mass email telling my story and why I was raising money. One person I had worked with years before donated $100 and told me he had Crohn's too! Another friend donated $$ and then sent the link to his dad, who has colitis and he donated another $100, etc. I emphasized that no amount was too small -I would send out emails on the 13th of the month and say please donate $13.10 for the $13.1 miles I am going to run! who can't donate $13? Plus most people see that then decide to donate $20, $25, 50, etc. People are generous and if you tell them why you are doing this you will have an easier time. Good luck!

You can do it! Ask, aks, ask....

Events with fundraising minimums are typically events that they will arrange travel for you, meaning there is also a cost to the event. They make a minimum to cover those costs and ensure that at least 75% of the money raised goes to mission critical programs.

I've participated in Team Challenge and it was a life changing, amazing experience. I've done Take Steps many times as well. I had to raise $2,500 for Team Challenge I think, and the staff made it super easy for me and lots of fun.

If we would read the secret history of our enemies,we would find in each mans life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.

Another idea is to ask someone you know that has a home-sale business like Pampered Chef, Thirty One bags, Jewelry, that type of thing if they do fundraisers.  I sell jewelry part-time and just did a fundraiser for my neighbor who has a team for the Crohn's walk.  I gave her 40% of my profit for having a book party for me.   Good luck!

I have to say my mom went to a yard sale this morning and everything made from the yard sale was being donated for the get your guts in gear walk. There was one last week in Richmond Virginia about 45 minutes away and theres one this weekend in Portmouth Virginia about 30 minutes away. I thought a yard sale was a really good idea.

The ladies daughter had been diagnosed in march and is just getting to know the disease. So for someone like that to meet people at the walk that have experience and knowledge is truely priceless. And hey it is a lot of money but it goes to a great cause, but i do agree there should not be a set amount of money which i am pretty sure is that $1,500 for a team and $300 for a single person. I think you get something if you raise the most at your walk or even if you beat the $1,500 dollar mark also, atleast thats what I read in the Crohns Advocate at my IBD Clinic at VCU Medical Center which sponsored the Richmond Walk at Richmond International Raceway.
