I have had Crohn's for 25 years and during that time have had about 6 abdominal surgeries which included 2 strictureplasties and 3 resections of my small bowel. I am currently on Cimzia and have been told I have a fistula connecting my colon and small intestines near the terminal ileum. I was recently hospitalized and released after a few days. I have had ongoing abdominal pain since July that has been tolerable to a point. My Mayo GI had me take an extra dose of Cimzia on Wednesday this week in hopes that whatever is going on will settle down and heal the fistula. I was checked in the hospital and didn't have an infection or blockage that they could see. I saw two colorectal surgeons on Monday who advised me to go on a mostly liquid diet of Ensure etc. They said the potential risks if surgery is needed would be a temporary ilestomy bag, possible TPN supplemental feedings due to danger of short bowel syndrome and ultimately that could lead to a bowel transplant down the road. Needless to say I felt like I had been hit by a ton of bricks after that appt. Monday. The surgeons said they would see me back on 11/11 and my GI doctor will follow up from there on 11/28. I first went to the Mayo in 2000 because another surgeon told me my intestines were dead during an exploratory abdominal surgery and he said I would need a bowel transplant then! I was put on Remicade at the Mayo and was on that until 3 years ago when I started Cimzia. The Remicade worked but was discontinued due to problems with the IVs and my veins and infiltration, starting them etc. They wanted to put a port a cath in and my doctor said no. I have always had complications with blockages and obstructions and this if my first fistula. Has anyone had success with fistulas healing ? I am praying for a miracle right now too.
