I am a male 56 years old and have been on Remicade for 2 years for Crohn's. In August of this year I developed a Urinary Tract Infection and I cannot get rid of it. I have been on 3 different antibiotics for it. I even had a picc line put in and was on Invanz through the picc line. Went for a urine test the other day and found out that it is still active. Urologist put me on Bactrim this time. So it's almost 4 months now. My GI thinks it may be related to the Remicade because of how it lowers my resistance to infections and might take me off of it. I am wondering if anyone has had this problem before.

Thanks

I have been on biologics for a long time. I think the risk of infections just comes with the territory, although yours sounds pretty difficult to get rid of. I'm sorry you're having such a hard time.

When I started Remicade, my GI said that I could be more susceptible to opportunistic infections such as UTI's. I haven't got one yet but I've only had 3 infusions so far - but that scares me because I usually get at least two a year. Usually my bladder infections quickly turn into kidney infections.

I hope you can get rid of your UTI, they are NO fun. Have you tried Macrobid yet? That was what I used last time and it seemed to do the trick.

Thanks for the reply. I did try that antibiotic. Seemed to help but did not remove it entirely. The doctor put me on Bactrim this time. Hopefully this will take care of it. It's almost 4 months now with the UTI. It's not fun!

Have you thought about the possibility of a fistula to the bladder?   If you do indeed have one, it would constantly be dumping bacteria into your bladder, and thus the UTI that you can't get rid of.  Just a thought...

Yes, I had tests done in Sept. while I was in the hospital for the uti. They were looking for a fistula from the Crohn's but it came back negative.
