I am new to this site and finally feeling comfortable enough to ask a questions concerning the consistency of my bowel movements.

Has anyone ever noticed what looks like pieces of skin in the toilet after having diarrhea?  This has been happening to me for quite some time.  I have checked on line for websites that discuss the consitency of bowel movements, but they don't mention this problem.

Could this be skin from the inside of my intestines?  If anyone else has experienced this problem, can you let me know and if so what did you do?

Thanks for listening, I always feel so much better when I go on this site not to mentions the level of comfort it allows you!!

You're likely seeing mucous/bits of undigested foods. IBDers tend to have excessive amounts of mucous, it's the nature of the beast.
bee propolis caps 500mg one cap twice/day
omegas 369 caps one cap twice/day
probiotics 10 billion cfu once/day
vitamins C-calcium ascorbate (easy on the gut) and vitamin A each once/day
Prodiem fibre supplement one cap before bed
I've also altered my diet (no junky stuff at all, processed, fast-foods, refined sugars, ect) and exercise regularly.
I went from 30+ bloody BM's/day with lots of lower back pain to an average of 5/day no bleeding no back pain and completely formed stools, still have severe urgency issues.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 2007 and have had 3 surgeries including an ileostomy that was reversed, so I know it isn't IBS.

I noticed that you take something called bee propolis, what does that do for you?

Yes, both IBD and IBS can increase excessive mucous (just another similarity between the 2 conditions) but I wasn't touching on the IBS topic.

For me, the bee propolis stopped ALL of my bleeding, cut my daily BM's down to half what I was going within the first week of taking it...along with stopping ALL severe lower back pain issues I had during my very severe flare before I started taking the BP. It also cut my mucous way down.

Keeping in mind, what works for some doesn't necessarily work for all, but you won't know what works, or lack of until you try. That said, if you're allergic to bees it's best to avoid bee products (same for anyone that is pregnant/breast feeding).

What's the color of this skin? Is it accompanied by blood? Do you have any severe abdominal pain? Vomiting? I once had something like that but this was pseudomembraneous colitis because of taking antibiotics. I had a whitish membrane filled inside with blood. It was severe then and I was put on steroid shots as well as oral steroids.
Hope it is not that tough as this requires urgent medical assistance.
Take care.

They are see thru with light brown ragged edges, I am not vomiting and just have the usual pain accompanying the diarrhea I experience every day.
I have not taken any anitbiotics for at least a year.
There are usually about 3 to 5 pieces and they are separate from other bowel movements.
I really appreciate your help.

I had something like that once that scared the dickens out of me. I took the skin to my family doctor and she said it was from the lining of my uterus, which we shed every month. This happens, this might not be what is happening to you, but it does happen to me.

I had that when I had Salmonella along with a bunch of mucous. It almost looked like it was the lining from my colon. My doc wasn't too concerned and it eventually went away. I don't know if it was really skin, or it just looked like that.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am going to ask my doctor about getting it tested. I never considered that, I don't think it is my uterus because that has been out of commission for about 10 years. Someone else mentioned to me that it could be sloughed off intestinal cells but either way, getting the skin tested is great advice.

Thanks so much Julia

I've had this many times and I agree it looks like a slip of skin from the intestine. I also wondered if it was mucus though. I never found out either way but to give you hope, I don't get that at all now since I have been eatting the correct diet.

I have not had it happen for about 2 weeks now, I to have changed my diet.  I take things away and add new things, trying to see what works.  I am a little slack on keeping my food diary and should be a little more attentive.
Thanks for your input.

You guys should check out the website "great taste no pain". It is a fairly simple concept that I have started using. I have had a reaction to my remicade treatments and would like to look at some non drug therapies and this has been a lifesaver. Hope it helps some of you. Also probiotics are a wonderful thing. Certain strains have been known to calm autoimmune diseases. turn

@jeneva123 thanks for that... a lot of people (including a lot of newbies like me) are very wary of anything that claims it can 'cure' almost any ailment though....especially from a brand new member whose only post is promoting something. :-s there have been warnings given for this kind of thing.. just a heads up :-)

hope you're feeling better cleanfreak! :-)
