I read a lot about questran as a med to stop d in this forum. So, I negotiated this w my GI and he prescribed a sachet before lunch along w imodium to stop my crazy d. I haven't tried it yet as my proctitis got activated (i'm in the middle of a flare up that started last July) and decided to give me a truce of d for a day. I took my rectal pentasa enema and i'm sure i will have my d back. I'm not constipated but only had 4 bms yesterday. My GI told me that taking rectal meds is not negotiable even if I do have severe anal fissures.
Back to questran. I read it's intended to lower cholestrol but I don't have any increased harmful fats. So out of your experience, taking questran should not cause any potential harm, right? What are the possible side effects?
Your replies are highly appreciated.

If you take too much you can easily get constipated. Most people find it useful to work up to a dose that controls their diarrhea without constipating them. Otherwise I know of know negative side effects. Hope it works for you.

Hi minnie - I take Questran (now I take the generic cholestyramine light version). Like Ides said, you need to find the balance of how much you need to take without causing the inverse constipation. I was told to take two packets a day and I still only need one on most days. I have no side effects from it other than I love the stuff for letting me get out of the house more and keeping me from having to run home in the midst of an outing. When I did try the sugar sweetened version, I had nausea but that was from the sugar in the morning.
Also, pay attention to what time of day you take it. I was told to take it at bedtime, but it works best first thing in the morning for me and I have to leave some time before I eat for it to kick in.
Finally, you are supposed to be careful about the timing of other meds around it. You should not take anything within 4 hours after taking it or 1 hour before. If you call it a side effect, this timing thing has made it hard for me to fit in my other meds that I used to take in the morning.
I don't know if you knew all of that, just wanted to toss it out there. Good luck and I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.

The last 3 feet of the 20 feet of small intestine we have are often referred to as the terminal ileum. The terminal ileum is where most of the bile salts from the gall bladder which help the digestion in the small intestine are absorbed. The colon is much more sensitve to any of the remaining bile salts. Too much bile salts getting into the colon irritates the colon lining and interferes w/water absorption as the chyme slime from the small intestine is solidified into poo as it moves thru the colon. Questran has been shown to absorb bile salts in the colon and thru reduce the bile salt irritation to the colon lining allowing the colon to do its job of removing the water from the stool and solidifying it.

Dear all, thank you very much. I really appreciate it. I'll take all the points you mentioned into consideration. I'm know not quite sure when should I take it. I'll leave questran to days when d is really uncontrolleable.

ChronieToo,

Why couldn't the Dr tell me that?!  I have researched a lot, didn't find my answers.  In a few sentences there it is!

The last part of my small intestine was removed, since then....diarrhea.  Dr. gave me Questran Lite,  that gives me back most of my freedom.  I still needed the explanation of "what's wrong with me".

Thank you!  And that is an understatement!  So good to know, my problem all this time is mostly bile!!

OliveOil....I have had CD for 22 years and I loved ChronieToo's explanation too. I knew what was wrong, just could not phrase it well enough. My comment was always...the acid is burning my tushy! I think I will use her explanation from now on :-).

I take Colestid - it is the pill version that does the same thing. Well worth the try. No side effects either.
