Colonoscopy prep when you have a fistula - I'm scared of it

Hi everyone,

I have had a RV fistula for the last 3 years.  I will get a colonoscopy on Wed 10/17 and I will prep tomorrow and I really dread that prep. Because caustic diarrhea liquid moving thru a recto-vaginal fistula at 50 to 100 mph for several hours just leaves me worn out and in a lot of pain. I took an oxycodone last time and it hardly made a dent in the pain. Just loosened me up so I could cry harder and louder!  I scared my dog (he usually follows me everywhere, but I was crying on the throne and the poor fellow got so scared for me).  The tub helps, but you can't sit in the tub in the middle of the prep (at least not for very long).  I know cause I tried to do it!  by the time I get back, the water is cold!

The new doc said, as old doc did, I "just have to do it". I know it's true. Then we can move on to finding a new treatment plan for me.

I know this is rambling and really might not make sense, but I just had to post about it.  Thanks for listening if you read this far.

At the tail end of the prep myself. Scope is this afternoon. It's miserable and I don't have a fistula. I'm sorry you have to endure the pain. You can get through it. See you on the other side.

Thanks for the replies -- it's always good to know I'm not alone.

I will get thru this, thanks again for the support I get here and good luck with the scope Dave123.

I go to the U of Chicago clinic. My doctor told me that they are moving toward using MRIs rather than colonoscopies thus removing the need for the prep. I don't know if they do the MRIs in all cases or just certain cases as we were just talking generally. I asked him 10 yrs ago why they weren't using MRIs so I felt kind of like I was way ahead of the researchers and doctors!! :)

MRI would be so much easier to tolerate!! I hope that the MRI becomes an option for more of us.  It wasn't suggested & I hadn't heard about it before, but will ask before my next scope!

But I got thru this prep much better than my last prep. I took 1/2 of pain pill (oxycodone) when I started the Miralax even tho I wasn't in pain yet. That pre-med did keep me ahead of the pain. Then about 4 or 5 hours later, I took the other half of the oxcycodone when I felt pain from the fistula. So some pain, but not crazy bad like the last time. I think what made the difference was taking a pre-pain med to get ahead of things & lots of vaseline & balneol on the fistula affected area.  Phew, so glad it's "behind" me now.
