Blueheron- I was diagnosed in 2011 with AVN in both knees. I took Prednisone a couple rounds during a two year period and about
the same dose as you and yet I was also one of the unlucky ones to get this DD. As for surgeries, I had bone decompression and graft in my left knee in Oct 2011 and will have the right done hopefully this Jan. or Feb. providing my crohns behaves well enough to get off Cimzia for the next couple months. My Ortho said my AVN was caused from Prednisone and to never take it again, even at a low dose unless it is to save my life. Once you have it and if you take steroids, it can spread to other joints or return to joints that were already grafted. The left knee, before surgery, was very advanced and already had some collapse visible on xray but the surgery graft has held so far and it has been since Oct. 2011.
I also have been having some left shoulder pain so I am scheduled for an MRI on the 21st but I am holding out hope it is not AVN in the shoulder causing my pain. That is the last thing I need! We will see soon enough. Has your ortho thought about
doing decompression and graft or is he waiting for full collapse then a joint replacement?
