Hi Everyone -
So, if you don't know my story...basically, here it is: I'm a 19 yo female - full time college student. I got super sick on the first day of classes in August (I've had 'digestive' issues since middle/elementary school). I had been on flagyl a couple of times for recurrent UTIs and it didn't help my GI isses (D 15-20 times a day, vomitting, pain, etc). My colonoscopy was clear, but had evidence of pseudomembranous colitis in my stool samples that they did weeks later (...but, my colon was clear, mind you). 8 Weeks later when they did the stool tests, they found c-diff. After 7 weeks of vanco and flagyl, it has cleared up and I've been c-diff free for about a month or two now. I'm still having major issues - losing weight, diarrhea, pain, mucous, nausea and fever (just a bit of background - I've had a fever for about 2 years now, nearly every day). On top of this... I can't seem to get ANY energy. I was put on prednisone by student health a couple of weeks ago (just an 8 day taper) for my lung issues and it helped my GI issues some. WAYYY less diarrhea, pain was lessened, and I was able to eat again (I lost almost 20 lbs in a couple of weeks b/c I couldn't eat). Well... that lasted like 3 days - 3 days of almost-bliss. And, for the last 3 days following that period of 'bliss', I've been getting worse and worse again and still no diagnosis in sight because I lost my medicaid and my GI is SO expensive. My question is.... how do you all cope with the exhaustion? I'm a student leader on campus and am a major activist in the community. But, just doing day-to-day classes wears me out like no other. I end up having to take a nap from 5-7pm and then I can't get to bed until early into the morning, only to get up the next day and do the same thing over again. I'm still managing to get some exercise in every single day and I think that helps me to get a little bit of energy - I'm also eating again... not that much by any means, but at least I have some calorie intake.
How do you deal with the fatigue? The fever? The constant, sometimes pointless urges? I just wish I had a diagnosis (last time, my GI said that he suspected crohn's further up in my small bowel possibly)... sometimes, I doubt there is ever something wrong just because my colonoscopy is normal and because of all of the years of being told "it's just IBS." But then I realize having a fever and always being uncomfortable/in pain is not normal. If the prednisone helped some, do you think that is pretty indicative that there is, in fact, some inflammation going on? I know it's hard to say.... but, I would think that, between that, mucous, a fever, and increasing amounts of bowel movements... there is something going on. But, I don't know... maybe I'm just over-thinking it and being crazy....?
