Well, I called the GI doc yesterday afternoon finally. The sharp pains were more often and sharper and I had to leave work early again so I called. Well, Yaa for that, but now I am more confused. In summary-
-22 years since initial diagnosis and only pentasa except courses of pred in 1990, 2001 and 2012
-CT scan in ER 10/2012 showed possible blockage from scar tissue, but a large dose of antibiotics and some painkillers and I was feeling fine and going to the bathroom like normal the next day. Do a short course of pred (40mg, down 10mg/5mg until done 6 weeks) felt better on 20mg and actually ate some chicken.
-December the GI doc does another CT and is concerned about new activity in colon (was always in TI). We follow with a scope 1/2/2013 and it shows "no activity in the colon and no active CD. GI concerned that I am still in some pain and not eating--gives me 6 months or we start more "serious meds"
-Still having issues with anything other than soft foods and sharp pains becoming more frequent
SO I called yesterday and asked if we could try pred again for a longer stint before we move on. He says he does not like the idea of prednisone since he is "not convinced this is active CD". Well, what else is it then. I told him I want to do anything to avoid the bigger drugs until absolutely necessary. I dont think we gave the pred a fair shake since it worked so well in the past. He begrudgingly agreed to try the pred with the instructions of calling him on Friday for an update and seeing him in 5 weeks.
So..hoping the pred can kick this despite it being apparently another short course. I know the big meds need to be considered....but if "it is not active CD", why would I take them either????
I am now thinking I should have pushed for the stool culture---keep forgetting the infection possibility and I had relief with the antibiotics in 10/2012....awww crap...this was so much easier 6 months ago.
ps...take my writing with a grain of salt. Major meeting today at 2pm so can't take day off, no sleep last night as FIL had chest pain at 11:30pm and we did not get back from ER until 3:30am, limited food...just grouchy as all get out.
