So I am starting to really develop some anxiety I have always been an anxious person , I feel it is getting worse bc of having this DD, I am in a flare, eating is causing me to get pretty anxious.  Not knowing what I will feel like after I eat, eating out socially is really the most hard the questions about what can I eat, or oh you poor thing you have to eat something... Also, just having the anxiety feeling makes my stomach cramp more. I am thinking mabe talking to my Doc. about anxiety meds. I have an appt. on wed. to see my GI, I am going to ask him about trying anxiety meds. or do most people have this perscribed by primary doc.?  I sometimes also wonder if my anxiety causes a lot of my crohns symptoms..  So what anxiety drugs work the best for people?  (was on paxil about 13years ago it gave me such bad night terrors I got off it is that typical for anxiety drugs)

Thanks for any input!

Currently taking 200mg Imuran, 6mg entocort, protonix, multivitamin, iron supplements, and fish oil.

Looking into biologics as can't get this flare undercontrol... but really don't want too!

You are not alone. I can relate. For 6 years, my GI kept prescribing antidepressants and antixylotics as he insists that stress exacerbates Crohn's. However, I kept refusing to take them. Now, I have a lot of insomnia and depression so I asked for Xanax 0.25mg. I take it daily and I'm fine.
Hope you feel better soon :)

You aren't alone. My anxiety levels have ratcheted in the past few years. The anxiety-producing nature of Crohn's/UC is well known; my GI cited a study where something like 36% of folks with IBD had anxiety bad enough to warrant treatment for it.

I don't really know much about anxiety meds. The only one I've tried is diapezam (valium) and that has not worked very well for me. Sorry I can't be of more help; just wanted to let you know you weren't alone with the anxiety.. :-/

You should see your PCP. I take Xanax .25 mg at night when I am in a flare and it helps me sleep. Xanax and Klonipin work well for anxiety, but they are both addicting, and so you shouldn't be taking it daily for a long period. Paxil is a good drug, but obviously not for you. There are other antidepressants/ anti-anxiety meds you can try. You should also consider seeing a therapist to learn coping skills, regular exercise, and yoga, all which can help with the anxiety. I get really anxious when I am in a flare and I don't know what is causing it (like right now;) When I'm in remission, I do not have anxiety. I hope this helps!!

Thanks I will talk to him at my appt. tomorrow, I am seeing my GI, hope he will help me with it, and not have to make a appt. with family doc. for it.  I would like to try xanax just for the fact I can take as needed...  minnietoty-- you said you take it daily is that perscribed that way? just wondering does it last all day? Or do you just take it bf bed?

Thanks for your responses I appreciate the input from others!!!

Hi , new on this site & i too had the same issues w/Anxiety & not being able to sleep or relax. my Doc prescribed me 0.5 mg of Rivotrol ( ie: Clonazapan ). Seems to work well for me. I take 1 -2 every day should my stress/anxiety start creeping in because of my Crohns. Hope this helps.

my anxiety comes from not knowing where the closest bathroom is. I do construction and sometimes we don't have keys to the houses we work on or if the home owner is home I refuse to ask them if I can use the bathroom every twenty minutes. also I have two daughters and I don't like going out in public with them because it can become frantic when trying to find a bathroom close by and having them to worry about. they are just old enough not to bring in the bathroom with me, but young enough that I worry leaving them outside the bathroom to wait on me. as far as antianxiety pills they put me on Zoloft during my first go around with crohns disease and it made me sweat so bad when I slept It felt like I wet the bed. I stopped taking it.
