I am so freaked out right now I don't know what to do. My husband died in a car accident less than two weeks ago, Tuesday I finally called the company benefit center to find out when our health insurance would be terminated, assuming I had 30-60 days of coverage only to find out that it terminated the day of his death. Cobra is very expensive so I was trying to find new insurance, at least for my kids, I know with a pre existing condition it is almost impossible to obtain it for myself at least until the first of the year. I checked with a couple of the major carriers and filled out the info for free quotes online and received several phone calls from different agencies. I got a professional sounding call a couple of times with an automated message press one if you think your info was given fraudulently, press two to speak to someone, press three to receive a call back at a later time. the first time I said to call back, the next time I took the call. It was a guy who took my info for me and my children, asked about
my pre existing condition, said he had a company that had
open enrollment in a group policy that covered health, dental, vision, and even Ad&D. No deductible etc. it sounded wonderful, not to mention much less than Cobra. Anyhow, I gave this guy all my information name, address, dates of birth, credit card info, even my SSN for the AD&D policy. He said the company would be calling me back for additional information and they would email all the details and policy info etc. I haven't heard back from anyone, and I realize it has been less than 24 hrs but I realized he had given me a phone number and it was not an 800 number like most major companies, I googled the phone number and there is no info online like for most major companies. I think this may have been a stupid identity theft scam and I feel sooo stupid. I don't need this right now. it is the middle of the night, I cannot call credit reporting agencies for another 5-6 hrs. I am just picturing some guy sitting up all night
opening credit accounts in my name and running up thousands of dollars of credit. I have perfect credit and never have issues obtaining credit.
How do I know if I have been scammed?
