Hi all, I've been reading about coconut oil and it seems to be wonderful stuff, good for digestive problems and inflammation and an anti fungal amongst many other things. I wondered if anyone had tried it and what the results were? Thanks, Kelly.

I cook with coconut oil and use it on my skin. I use in in everything I can. It's good for you and I enjoy the flavor.

Thanks for the replies, I've been having it in my coffee, cooked with it for the first time tonight and I've used it on my skin for the last two days and I have to say I've already seen a difference with my psoriasis, much smoother.

Well I'm in the uk and I bought it from a local supermarket, apparently it's better to get the extra virgin organic type. I've been using it for about 4 days now and there is a marked improvement in my psoriasis, I can't believe it!

I am surprised bc my boss' wife has Crohns as well and now that I was diagnosed she says it is the worst enemy! And my doc also said that no oils! Never! I am reluctant to try coconut water, even coconut yogurt, or coconut milk... I guess everyone is different...but the horror stories keep me away from it. I am glad it has worked for some people. After all... doctors in general seem to know very little about what causes CD, UC and IBD, their opinions are what we have to take. Good luck everyone, God bless you, let's enjoy the good days and pray the bad ones come to pass with ease. I have hope that there will be a cure and our future generations won't have to live with this, or cancer, or anything like that. Amen.

You may want to get a 2nd opinion from another doc.

Coconut oil is used for diabetes, heart disease, chronic fatigue, Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Alzheimer’s disease, thyroid conditions, energy, and boosting the immune system. Ironically, despite coconut oil’s high calorie and saturated fat content, some people use it to lose weight and lower cholesterol.

Babeinthewoods- Thanks! I will definitely try half a cup of coconut water today to see how it goes. I feel like I need to change my doctor as well. Lots of doubts and little time in the office when I go see him. He is too busy.
Thank you.

Gezinha, we used to have a saying on the Fibro Forum: "Remember, 50% of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class. Yours may be one of them." Daughter with Crohns has started using coconut oil in baking and has had better luck with digestion. She is using it in place of "vegetable oil". Good luck with finding a new doc.

Wasn't there a story of someone who used coconut macaroons to help their IBD? I am able to digest it and love coconut. Try some soups made with coconut milk maybe? Not sure if it would have the same benefits but it's very tasty!

I believe coconut oil is one of the most healing oils. It is an anti fungel and one of the side effects is that in the begining you may experience die off. This is comon so do not be discouraged if that happens. Although you will feel bad, it is actually part of the healing process.

One of the best sources is Tropical Traditions. Their products are 100% natural without chemicals, so all the healing properties are retained. They seem to always have coupons, including BOGO and free shipping. No need to pay full price. They also sell coconut cream and grated coconut, all excellent. They also have a great recipe section that uses ther products. Very highly recommended.

It is my understanding that coconut water is very different and used for different things than the oil. Coconut water is high in natural electrolyes. It can be made with green or more mature coconuts. Green coconuts have a high poly/di scharides content which is bad for many chrohn's folks (including me). Also, most packaged cocnut water has additives that I would not take. Water is not an antifungel.

Here is a link about coconut macaroons and diarrhea

http://www.livestrong.com/article/519469-macaroons-and-diarrhea/

My daughter has used it when she had diarrhea and said it helped her.

I personally used Whole leaf Aloe Vera Juice or fresh aloe vera gel. It has been a big help for minimizing the effects of Crohns.

I just started drinking coconut milk in fruit smoothies, with bananas + berries or an avocado, and have no trouble with it.  I've read wonderful things about aloe vera, but it gave me D.

I have heard someone else say that about aloe vera giving them diarrhea.
I have never had diarrhea with fresh Aloe Vera gel or the bottled whole leaf juice and I've been using Aloe for over 20 years. There are many different varieties but the broad leaf plants I use do not have any of the yellowish substance in them.
Most products today remove the aloin from their Aloe Juices, like "Lily of the Desert"
Aloin is the yellow substance right inside the outer leaf & has been used in the past as a laxative.
What aloe vera product did you use ? Also you can buy the Gel only or inner leaf.
When you say coconut milk, do you mean the canned coconut milk or the fresh or bottled coconut water ? My daughter has tried coconut gel caps.

I am not affiliated in any way with any of these companies.

Here are some interesting links. There are also studies that the below company has done with their aloe juice.

No_pain I just remember a pretty green bottle the aloe came in, I don't remember the brand name. For the coconut milk I buy SO Delicious-it comes in a cardboard container. No refrigeration until you open it. I may give the aloe another try, thanks for the advice.

I use coconut milk and love the taste. Once you open the can you need to refrigerate it, as it has a very short shelf life. Calories will vary as I found out. Some have less while others have quite a bit. I opt for the ones with the most. Because of the high calorie content in some, limit how much you drink per day. Coconut milk is awesome, with just a pinch of natural sweetness, not sickly, just yummy.
