Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in awhile but wanted to share something. I heard about a study where they found a connection with vitamin D deficiency and Crohn's or IBD in general. I "think" it was Johns Hopkins who did the study.

Anyway, I have been watching a health show on tv, Your Health with Dr. Richard and Cindy Becker. He talks often of this vitamin D deficiency and thinks quite a lot of Americans are low in it. He also claims the RDA is way too low.

So, it's easy and cheap to supplement and I have been doing so, along with some other vitamins. I have noticed an improvement in my crohn's colitis. I just wanted to pass it on in case it would help someone else. There's a lot of health benefits that go along with D, but this study specifically focused on us crohnies. Unless we are out in the sun most days, we could probably use some extra D. From what I have read, it takes quite a bit to get to a toxic level so supplementing is safe, but do your own research.

I boosted my D to 10,000 IU's for a month, then lowered to about 6,000 IU's most days. I am up to 8,000 now because my recent blood work showed I am a little less than where I'd like to be. Also, overweight people need more. My goal is at least 50 ng/ml. I've heard recommendations of 30-80ng/ml. The connections to lowered cancer risk may be enough of a reason to supplement.

I've been supplementing for more than 5 years. I keep my blood levels at about 40 ng/ml.

I got some Vit D for my family because I read an article that it is just as effective at preventing the flu as a flu shot. I was taking it too until I got to thinking that it says Immune Support right on the bottle, and if I am going to start Humira, isn't the goal to knock down my overactive immune system so as to decrease the inflammation? I ran it by my RA friend who is very knowledgeable regarding supps, and she said yes, that logic holds water, probably don't take the Vit D--she never does any immune support things for that very reason.

What do you think of this line of thought?

I never see Vit D on my blood work sheet?  don't think the doctor ever tests for this vitamin deficiency?

Vitamin D doesn't just increase your immune system, it modulates it. Get your blood levels of vitamin D checked. There are numerous posts on HW how it is effective for IBD and Crohn's as well as general health.

For your own peace of mind you can consult your doctor about taking vitamin D with Humira.
