Hi, I was wondering if anyone can answer some CD questions. I have not been diagnosed but I am having a colonoscopy this coming Friday and they will be taking a biopsy. In the meantime I am reading all about CD and have a few questions and wondering if this could be what I am experiencing. I have been having Diarrhea only at night with certain foods I eat. The foods are never consistent but I get bad cramps and gas then the diarrhea comes within an hour after supper. The GI doc thought maybe it could be lactose so I got the otc pill Lactaid thought it was helping untill tonight after having pizza for supper I ended up in the bathroom but with no cramping just the diarrhea. I have seen blood before that's when I decided to go to the doc. and he had me do two different types of stool samples and it came back Neg. I'm at a loss I read the symptoms of Crohns disease it kinda sounds what im going through but I have been reading some people on here what they are going through and it doesn't sound like that. Can someone tell me what there symptoms are please. Thank you in advance.

Hi and Welcome to the forum, After the colonoscopy the doctor
can see if it's IBD or if you have IBS.

There are many things that can cause your symptoms. CD is one, but IBS and food intolerances are others.

Please try to not worry too much. In fact I would recommend not being ont this board until you know you need to. A lot of folks here have severe CD and it can be pretty scary thinking that you wil follow their path.

You do not know you have CD and even if you do most do not have severe CD.

Calming thoughts

HI!

You could have any number of things from lactose intolerance (mozarella) to celiac (wheat in the pizza crust) to a simple intestinal bug, and then there are Crohns, ulcerative colitis, etc.

BTW "colitis" only means an inflamed colon ("-itis" means inflamed), and there are many reasons someone can have it. A viral or bacterial infection, food poisoning, autoimmune problems, food sensitivities such as celiac---don't worry about it until the biopsy has told you what is going on. You will have many more answers once the scope is done.

As to the colonoscopy -- you will not have any discomfort from it; you will be asleep or sedated enough it does not hurt. The prep, however, is a nuisance.

I am sure there are tips threads for colonoscopies -- go find some or just google it. My own recomendations: 1. start fasting from solids 12 hrs earlier than they say. It makes the prep go faster the night before 2. Put a stool or sturdy box in the bathroom to rest your feet on--it gives your thighs a break when you have to do all that sitting on the pot -- 3. supply the bathroom with a bunch of trashy novels, sudoku, crosswords, iPod or radio, etc 4. and put a nice scented candle in there-- 5. During your solid food fast you can also suck on hard candies if your blood sugar drops, as long as they are not red or purple or blue colored--so you can have lemon drops or pineapple Lifesavers, etc. And you also can have non-red/purple gumdrops or "spearmint leaves" (they are solid when you bite them but they are actually sugar syrup which has been cooked long enough that it is solid at room temp. If you hold it in your mouth you will notice it dissolves---so it is really a clear liquid, not solid food as potatoes, etc are). 6. For your solids fast, get a carton of culinary chicken broth, such as Rachel Ray brand, and add that to the boullion cube broth. It makes it taste much better. But the culinary broth is much too "strong" to drink straight. 7. Baby wipes! 8. Bring some mild crackers to the hosp/clinic in case they do not have them there when you are done. You will be hungry when you come out of it. Some places have something for you right away & some do not. 9. Go home & rest for the remainder of the day. The anesthesia or sedative will make you unable to drive--make the most of your day off. Have a mild dinner such as rice & chicken; your insides did just have a garden hose stuck up inside them. And relax, because you will now learn what is going on. Having an answer is way better than not---you will know what you are dealing with! Best to you!

Thank you guys so much. I know I shouldn't be reading on here but as a hypochondriac that I am I did read! LOL Thanks for the day before tips. I am kinda nervous about that I am taking the pills which is 32 of them and can not eat which I love to eat. Again thank you all for taking time to reply back to me, I will not read any more until I know. Blessings to you all.

Reading about Crohn's can scare the pants off anyone, so try not to cross that bridge just yet. Pizza can give many diarrhea. If it's something besides homemade, it can be full of grease, spices, hidden chemicals that can bother the stomach, gassy onions, garlic, and peppers, and enough cheese to overload a dose of Lactaid. Hopefully it's something like that.

Yes, it is very scary, and I never knew about Crohns until the doc. said he was going to test me. Through the research I have done and found out more about Crohns I truly had no idea how bad some people have it and I do feel very blessed with the little bit of issues I am having. I pray it is not that but, pray now for everyone who does have it. Thanks for the reply.
