Could convince my GI that both lactoferrin and folic acid were not doing the trick, anemia symptoms were becoming worse and they caused me severe nausea. So, I was prescribed iron sucrose infusions weekly for 3 weeks, then I would have another cbc test to see whether I'll repeat them or not.
I had my first infusion today. I told my GI I was afraid I might have bad stomach reactions as happened before. He assured me that this is a different type of iron and prescribed nexium and zofran iv to be taken prior to the infusion.
I was very energetic after I finished the infusion but when I went home, I felt fatigue. Is this normal? After how many infusions should I feel any improvement?

Yes, I felt fatigued after iron infusions but I couldn't tell if it was because I was anemic in the first place, or sitting around all day in the infusion clinic is tiring, or from the infusion itself. I think for me it took about a week before getting more energy after the infusions. I hope it helps you!

Thank you Gumby for telling me it's normal. Now, I'm becoming too dizzy but these nice side effects won't deter me to continue the infusions. Hope it kicks in quickly.
Take care :)

Venofer makes me so tired. I've been getting it for a while now and always go home and sleep all day after the infusion. Iron infusions make me tired in general though. I have never gotten energy from them.

Cosmofer gave me an anaphylactic reaction, so I wouldn't touch Venofer with a bargepole.

I was able to tolerate Ferinject and had it given over two infusions rather than one. As far as I remember it helped with my anaemia symptoms pretty much immediately (leg issues and breathlessness when walking). It might have given me more energy, I don't remember. I'm always braindead nowadays though, anyway - I mean, I've forgotten what it's like to not be braindead skull
Dx Crohn's in summer of 2000. (Yay skull)
Tried and failed: 5-ASAs, azathioprine, 6MP, Remicade, methotrexate, Humira, various diets.
Had surgery Feb '13 - subtotal colectomy with end ileostomy. First thing to put me into remission in 13 years.
Had second surgery 10th July '15 to reverse the stoma and connect the ileum to the rectum. Feeling rough.

It was really unexpected for me the fatigue and drowsiness iron sucrose infusions caused me. I spent all Saturday sleeping and yesterday I was very drowsy. Still I have two rounds to go. Hope things get better by time.

Minnie, When I had my first infusions my iron was so low that it took till the third one to begin feeling the effects. If I remember right I was given Ferrlicet(?) or something like that. But I do remember when it kicked in I felt almost human again. Wish you luck!
