I used to take a monthly B12 shot for the last 6 months to build up my B stores as both my GI and the orthopedic decided. I was checking w my GI whether I should stop them or continue them as the 6 months have been finished , and he informed me I have to take these monthly B12 shots life-long. I know that all of Crohnies are on them and that I have ample reasons for getting it like being a GERDie, a Crohnie and being on long-term Nexium all qualify me for this monthly injection. I have to start my calendar on the 12th day of each month So, does this mean that anything I eat and has vitamin B is useless? Sometimes I wonder why should I eat as long as it's not going to be absorbed and it has to be taken through the parental route

My B12 stores are good also, but they have me continue taking the shots anyway. So that I don't deplete again. I also have to take folic acid and I take a Super B-complex vitamin daily. Not sure how much of that really absorbs. I think we absorb some of our food, maybe not enough to keep up our vitamin stores in certain vitamins. I take Vitamin D capsules, as mine is very low. But I have to wonder if it's even helping if I can't absorb.

Jen, same here. I take a calcium + D3 tablet and I doubt they are doing any good, too.

I also take monthly B12 shots. I have had Crohn's for 25 years and have developed Pernicious Anemia. This comes from the intestines not being able to absorb it from food. The intestines are missing the intrinsic factor that allows this. Have you been tested for this?

I have had Crohn's for more than 30 years. I have been fortunate to only have 1 surgery. I have been on B-12 injections for more than 20 years. They are very important as you can develop pernicious anemia. Even with the B-12 I have symptoms of pernicious anemia. I have been very forgetful for a long. I have extreme fatigue and now my hair is really thinning. This the second time I have gone through the thinning. The first was during a really bad flair. It never all came back so now it's really getting thin. There are a lot of bad things that can happen without the B-12. Make sure to take your injections very regularly. I used to be kind of lax with them and I've paid the price.
Hope this finds you feeling well,
Judi
