My GI wants me off of Entocort and told me to think over which drug I would perfer. The choices (in order of her prefenrece) were Remcade, Entyvio, Humira and Imuran. My insurance does not cover Remcade or Entyvio so the choice is only between Humira or Imuran. I have done lots of research on both meds and to me the side effects of both of them seems pretty scary. I know the doctor will make the final choice but any input from actual users would help alot.

Thanks

Humira. yes, they are all scary. It took me several years to commit to the big drugs during which time i developed a fistula which I lived with for 3 years and felt terrible a considerable amount of time. I had trouble with humira after a few months and eventually had to get off of it but it healed the fistula and made me feel 99% better so it was well worth it and i wouldn't change a thing about my decision to take it. The side effects did not last either once i got off of it. Many people have no problem with it. I would say just take it seriously and make sure you report any concerns to your doctor and do all needed blood work. I am currently on remicade and 6mp.
good luck with your choice, I hope it works!

Well, considering Imuran gave me a nasty case of pancreatitis , and lovely stay in the hospital. I'd have to say go for Humira. Remicade has been the only one so far that's worked for me, but I know others have had success with Humira. If you start getting migraines on it, it could be a side effect from them. My doctor said he saw a few patients that got migraines with Humira.

It shouldn't be an either/or question of imuran or Humira. If you start Humira, you should start - or already be on - imuran. Studies have shown a clear benefit of taking the two together, both in terms of treating the disease and in terms of preventing antibody formation to the biologic med.

DaleB, what is the status of your Crohn's? Where is it located and how bad is it? Imuran requires blood monitoring and can take a few months to help. If your disease is bad, that might be too long to wait. If your disease isn't appearing to be too aggressive, you may have time to try imuran alone and see how it goes, knowing you can add a biologic later as needed.

Also, for what it's worth, Remicade continues to have the best data for treating IBD, compared to the other biologics.

What beave said is true, being on a combination of those drugs has better results, and helps us to not build antibodies to the biologic. Really something to consider.

Thanks for the replies. I have moderate Crohn's in the illeum, with moderate scaring. I was not aware that I could take both meds at the same time. Will definately ask the doctor about that.

Call Remicade on the number listed on their site. Ask about the Remistart program. I pay only $5.00 per visit for the infusion and the Remicade is covered by them. All you have to do is send in paperwork to them and they load it on a debit card. I've been using it for 2 years now.

Thanks, I'll look into that.
