I've been having a rough time, primarily with IBS-D, along with lots of gas and abdominal pain that is waking me up at night. I just got my doc to do stool studies which all came out normal, so no c.diff this time. I also had him get a fecal calprotectin, but I haven't gotten those results back. I see my GI doc next week and I'll talk to him about making sure this isn't actually a Crohn's flare. I'm always a little anxious because I am not on maintenance meds since my re-section, so I always worry about the Crohn's coming back.

Anyway, I've been reading about the Low Fodmap diet, and if it seems like if I'm really in remission and this is all bad IBS, then I'm thinking of giving it a try. What I like about it is that it is an elimination diet, so once you follow it for awhile you can slowly add back foods and see if they bother you. So it seems more user friendly than the SCD, which honestly seems overwhelmingly difficult for me to fathom. I am just wondering if anyone here has done it and has any insight? I'm sick of being in pain and running for bathrooms. This is not at all how I imagined "remission" to be.

Sorry you have not been feeling very well. I do FODMAP and have learned which FODMAP foods are ok in small amounts and which are always a problem. For me onions are a killer, but I can have a little of the green part of scallions with no problem. Fruits like Apple, pear and grapes sadly have lots of fructose, but a banana is fine. Sometimes it feels good to cheat and have just a sliver of apple once in a while and that seems to be ok. Hope you get good results with the diet, I was miserable before I tried it.

I have done the FODMAP, no fructose diet that my dietitian (recommended by my GI as she specializes in IBD and IBS diets) it's not meant to necessarily be a long term forever diet, it's to see if you have an intolerance to any of the certain groups of foods....we determined my IBS is stress driven since I had no reactions/differences in my bowel habits at all while doing the entire diet.

You follow it for 6 weeks then reintroduce (slowly as I was guided) journal all the way from the beginning of the diet to the end including the 6 week reintroduction.

Resected or not, you should always be on immunosuppressants with Crohn's.

As for fodmap, you may find this useful:

wiki article said...
Favorable foods (i.e. fructose equal to or less than glucose)[edit]
The following list of favorable foods was cited in the paper: "Fructose malabsorption and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Guidelines for effective dietary management".[14] The fructose and glucose contents of foods listed on the Australian food standards[17] would appear to indicate that most of the listed foods have higher fructose levels.

Stone fruit: apricot, nectarine, peach, plum (caution — these fruits contain sorbitol);
Berry fruit, blackberry, boysenberry, cranberry, raspberry, strawberry, loganberry;
Citrus fruit: kumquat, grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin, orange, tangelo;
Other fruits: ripe banana, jackfruit, passion fruit, pineapple, rhubarb, tamarillo.

Hi gumby.

I think the Low Fodmap diet sounds like a decent idea. If it works, then it should reduce your gas and abdominal pain (which is probably being caused by the gas in the absence of active Crohn's). In fact I've thought about giving it a go, but I'm lazy and I also don't really get a lot of gas (I think - not sure what counts as a lot, tbh, but I have one or two lengthy farts a day normally).

Also, even in remission it's not a bad idea to go on 6MP or azathioprine. It may also help allay your fears about the Crohn's coming back.

Thanks everyone. I'll let you know how it goes. xy123....I've been advised to not take any meds by an IBD specialist at U of Chicago, but I do have close monitoring. So you are right in most cases that people should stay on maintenance immunosuppressives, but I guess they feel that my Crohn's was slow growing and I'm an old lady, so they look at it differently.....it does make me a little anxious, but it is always a matter of looking at the risk/benefit ratio. I am concerned thought that my Vit D and B-12 are so low.....makes me wonder if something is cooking in there. I'll see what my GI says at my visit next week. Thanks for all the input!

I've found the app by Monash Uni helpful, although it's pricey. I found it required a fair bit of planning, but agree it is less overwhelming than SCD.

Good luck. Hope it can help settle your symptoms.
