So we've got dumb immune systems. The sort of immune system that would have voted for Brexit/the Tories if it had a vote. Great.

We seem to be a long, long way off from even finding the root cause, let alone a solution to it. What sort of cells would have an extremely similar shape to tissue cells? Some bacteria? (i.e. MAP). Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like we need to find out exactly what the immune system is attacking first of all. And then better treatments will stem from that (probably). I presume if it was easy it would have been discovered by now though. So it's probably hideously complicated. Great.

Thanks anyway, scifigal. Your explanations have been very clear.

The other fun bit is some bacterium explode when attacked by WBC, sending protein shards into healthy cells. I've heard some researchers say that's why healthy cells could be attacked. They now have foreign protein DNA within them, thus look like invaders themselves, and alarm bells go off. You now have an immune system targeting healthy tissue. Lots of interesting ideas/theories but no certainties.

Thanks, like I said, it's not a perfect analogy, but it made the most sense to me. iPoop, that's yet another theory! I agree NCOT, we have no idea what's really being attacked, but I think even if we knew that, we wouldn't be able to do much to stop it once the attacking starts. And it really could be different for everyone - some could have it be the healthy tissue, others the shards, others the bacteria, etc. And that would be why different meds work differently for everyone, or why we have different trigger foods.
"For this thing I besought the Lord thrice that it depart from me. He said, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities; I take pleasure in infirmities, reproaches, necessities, persecutions, distresses, for when I am weak, then am I strong" 2 Cor
