Has anyone else here gotten reoccurring kidney stones and at some point did you ever figure out a way to stop them?

I have stone disease. I take potassium citrate pills 3x a day. they're tough to swallow but they're supposed to shrink the stones so they don't hurt as badly.

Kidney stones seem to be something that some people are just prone to. Could be a hereditary thing, but I'm not sure. I had my first stones in my early 30's, and at that time the Doctor actually told me to drink 2 beers a day. How's that for sound medical advice?

Taking preventative measures will certainly help. Diet wise, stay away from foods that are high in Oxylates. These really contribute to the formation of stones. Plenty of fluids as well to keep things moving.

My gi says IBDer's are more prone to kidney stones than the average person. Fat malabsorption seems to play a role too. You really need to drink a lot of fluids. I passed one many years & hope I never have another one.

In the early '80s I was hospitalized 5 times with kidney stones. They started while living in Germany and I was told the high calcium content in the water was contributing. I could only drink imported water. When we were transferred Stateside, I had a couple more and then it resolved. At the time all this was happening I was a young woman in my 30s and was told I should not be having this. Of course I had undiagnosed CD and it was only years later that the connection was made.

Drinking lots of water and watching calcium oxalate intake was what I was told to do. What are your stones composed of?

Yeah they are horrible. Seemed to get slightly easier after the first ones.
As others have said, lots of fluid, making sure you don't let kidneys dry out.
And of course finding a way to get illness under control....
Good luck

depends on what the stones are made of really. talk with you stone dr and see if any have been lab tested. if not you may have to 'catch ' the next one and have it tested. they have tools for that if your not aware. ;o). btw any of you googled kidney stone photos. freakin' alien looking. saw one typ that looked like a triangle of razor blades and others that looked like a spiked ball on a mace!
