My doctor put me on Humira ( I flared on and off for 14 years, mostly on) and I started gaining weight. I went from 170 to 220lbs in 6 months. I was still getting Crohns symptoms but I didn’t want to get too overweight. I decided to try the Keto diet (eliminating carbs). The first week was rough, I had trouble sleeping and experienced diarrhea and even my ilium would remind me of my Crohns. After a week all of my Crohns symptoms disappeared. I really felt like a new man, this pushed me beyond what Humira was doing to help. I kept at it and was exercising at the same time. During Christmas I decided to eat carbs because in my family Christmas starts December 24th and continues until January 1st, non stop parties. Well my guts did not like that and I started feeling Crohns symptoms coming on about the 29th getting worse to January 1st. January 2nd I went back to the Keto diet plus exercise and now January 4th the symptoms are gone.
I developed a theory for this change. Carbs are basically sugars, glucose in starch’s, fructose in fruit and sucrose in sugars. Sugars cause the bloating, which in turn causes pain.

Has anyone else tried the Keto diet? I am interested in your results.

Thank you

I don't have any direct experience, but have heard of good success following Keto type diets. Mainly the next step in the Keto chain which is the Carnivore diet. Dr. Shawn Baker is a huge advocate of the Carnivore diet, but a lot of the evidence is anecdotal. Plenty of info via the internet. Hope Keto continues to work for you.

It looks like diet can be very beneficial for IBD patients. This tiny study done at Scripps in San Diego placed IBD patients (Crohn’s and UC) on an AIP diet (Autoimmune Paleo) for six or eight weeks. No one changed their medications. In that time they achieved a 78% remission rate based on bio markers. Amazing! Of course a larger study is needed, but funding is an issue. Scripps is now crowd funding to run a small study on Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis patients using the AIP diet.

Looks like you stumbled on to the keto diet which works for you and often shares similar dietary restrictions. Look into the AIP diet. My bet that carbs like gluten should permanently be removed from your diet. Consider getting tested for celiac disease before going gluten free as it is commonly linked with IBD.

Eleven years ago, I cured myself of Crohns with the SCD diet which basiclly the same as your diet, zero carbs. The only meds I took were pantassa for a few months, but after that nothing. My last symptom was in 2007 and after 8 months following the diet 100% (without cheating), all my sysmptoms were gone, and to this day, they have never come back. I still follow the SCD diet , but not as strick as before and I feel great.

Three years ago, I had a colonscopy and the GI could not find any active or inactive traces CD in my intestines and told me that I can consider myself completely cured.
