I've recently read that they now think 90% of seratonin is created in the gut rather than the brain. I have found that if I go without eating for a period of time (3-4 days) because I am not well my mood sky-rockets, I am on top of the world and I wondered if anyone else has had this experience?

Have you ever struggled with an eating disorder? I'm wondering if you have a sense of control when you don't eat? Your body needs nutrition in order to heal and function. Going 3-4 days with no food is not a great idea

No I have never had an eating disorder, no, I do not receive a "sense of control" when I do not eat and no that did not answer the question I asked

There's a common misconception about serotonin. The serotonin in the brain acts entirely differently than serotonin in the guts, or other parts of the body. Serotonin in the guts does not cross the blood brain barrier. It regulates bowel movements and other functions, however it has no effect there upon mood.

Not eating gives bowel rest. When the bowel is inflamed, bowel rest provides relief. That relief feels great! But of course we need to eat...so it isn't a long term solution.

Intermittent fasting is something that I have found to be helpful in overall feeling of wellbeing but fasting for 3-4 days is too long to go without nutrition.
