Am curious to know why do I do better on a low residual diet compared to something like a SCD or Keto for example? I've tried SCD and though it sounds right and science behind it, I can never gain weight and have toilet visits more then I should compared to a low residual diet and when I say low residual I still have fruits and vegetables but not as much as an SCD or Keto would recommend, I limit it to two fruits a day and 2 vegetables a day. Should I fix something that's not broken? I'm happy have one crap in the morning been quite formed rather than having 2/3 loose stools if I was on SCD or Keto for example.

A low residue diet isn't a diet that's meant to be followed as a long term alternative to a normal eating plan. The good side of going low residue, particularly for those with IBD is, it will give the digestive system a chance to rest. The diet is very low fibre, and relies on foods that are highly digestible for most. Good for those that are experiencing symptoms.

The bad side for going low residue is, it has very little nutritive value. What you might try is, incorporating some of the mainstays of low residue, (pastas, rice, low fibre cooked veg.), along with experimenting through elimination foods that are more nutritive, but maybe agree with your system more.

It's tough to find hard and fast rules that apply to everyone, especially when it comes to food choices. Even those without IBD have food sensitivities. Of late, I have heard of some IBDers having success with the carnivore diet. Not an approach I necessarily agree with, but something to look into. THe bottom line is, you might need to continue through trial and error for awhile.

The problem I find with these diets is I can never maintain my weight and end up losing a few pounds as I don't eat enough calories throughout the day. Im a skinny bloke as it is, so when I don't have eat enough calories I can see I've lost a few pounds after a week or so and that gives me anixety, big time. I've heard of the canivore diet way to much meat for me... But who knows maybe I'll try it in the future if I hear more successful stories about it.

I have tried more diets than I care to think about, many are too extreme & restrictive for people. Consider a food log & slowly introduce food back into your diet. You need protein in your diet. Instead of eating 3 times a day, add in healthy snacks in between. In other words find foods that works for you that are healthy.

Take care.

If weight gain is an issue, you might try to supplement your diet with calorie rich meal replacement drinks, like Ensure or Boost. There are many, many others in this category though. You'll need to check out your local Health food store, and perhaps consult with your GI.

I appreciate the tips guys! Protein is not an issue for me I have plenty of eggs, chicken, red meat and homemade yoghurt. My issue is calories I don't take enough calories throughout the day as I don't eat junk food yes I have bread and rice but i don't go out and have a full McDonald's meal or any sort of take away to have big calorie meals. I will look into supplement drinks smile thank you

I have been struggling with weight too. Crohn’s is not going well and not only have I not been able to put back on any of the weight I lost during resection surgery (in 2017) so still skinny but during recent flare of no appetite and nausea the scales were creeping down at alarming rate. Anyway. Recently I have been having a daily smoothie of 200ml coconut milk blended with a blob of almond butter, 2 bananas, some frozen chopped mango/ pineapple and a little ginger. This is in addition to 3 meals a day. Sometimes I swap for green smoothie of avocado + something green and leafy + something sweet like apple juice.
It has stopped the weight loss and slowly starting to creep up although if I miss a day or swap for a meal instead of having as an extra the progress stops.
Good luck to you

Check out the diet UMass has been investigating- IBD AID diet. Seems promising at least for some and as a compliment to Medication. They have a step by step way of transition from low residue to a more normal diet. Nut butters and avacodo are two helpful parts of the diet that can be used to keep calories on.
