Hi Everyone,
I've had Crohn's disease for about 50 years and have been very fortunate in that my Crohn's has been under control for about 30 years since I had a bowel resection of the terminal ileum. However, in the last 3 or 4 years, I have experienced more diareaha and almost constant gas. As you can guess, this is extremely embarrassing as I usually have no control of when the gas is going to happen. I was at a very nice dinner party and when I got up from the chair, it just exploded with not only one explosion but it just kept on coming. I talked with both my GP and GI docs about this but neither of them seemed to take it seriously and had no help for me. I am desperate and wonder if anyone else has had this experience and if so, what they did about it. Needless to say, I've tried all of the common treatments like beano, etc. I'd appreciate any help.

Can you control you gas, i.e. hold your gas for one minute until you can go to the bathroom and pass it? If you cannot control your gas, I am thinking about bowel incontinence. This may have something to do with the muscular control in your bowel due to inflammation.

For me, I can always control my gas. But in the past years, I experienced excessive amount of gas. This excessive gas has something to do with bacterial imbalance in your bowel. The excessive growth of bacteria can cause fermentation and gas. This could be SIBO or inflammation in the bowel. Have you tried antibiotic or probiotic?

I do not know why, but I am now only experiencing moderate amount of gas. Actually, if I do not pass gas in a day, I would become very worried. Because no gas means no bowel movement, which is bad.

RosemaryB, have you tried any of the OTC anti-gas meds? When gas hits me I use the maximum strength Phazyme, it contains Simethicone which is really helpful. Also, a lot of foods can cause gas, broccoli & black pepper as an example. Have you had a stool test done recently to rule out any possible infection or other pathogens? If not this is something your GP can order. I use Imodium a lot to help with the diarrhea.

I have been exactly where you are at right now. Take care.

Thank you Erudite and straydog, I appreciate your replies. I would be very interested in the Chinese herbs that Erudite mentioned, I am a big fan of acupuncture, so I'm open to alternative medicines. Straydog, I will try Phazyme, going to the drugstore today to pick some up. And, actually I just got a script from my GI doc to have a stool test.
Thank you both for your replies, your suggestions were very helpful.

Rosemary, something else to consider is calling your gi's office & asking for the dr to call you in an antispasmodic. Bentyl which comes in a generic can be very helpful in calming down the spasms in the intestines which will help slow down the diarrhea too. Sorry I forgot to mention this in my above post.

Well, great news. My GI doc put me on Entocort about a month ago and miracles of miracles, the diareaha and gas are very much under control. I had been on sulfazulfadine for about 50 years and I guess it just quit working for me. Also, thank you Straydog, I did buy Phazyme for gas and that works whenever I feel a little gassy. This forum is so helpful. Thanks Guys

So glad that your dr changed up your medication & the Entocort is working! Awesome the Phazyme is giving you some relief too. Be sure to avoid foods that cause gas.

Take care.
