i have had a seton in for a anal fistula for a few months. for the past 3 days, i have had pain and terrible itching down there. all day long feels very sore and burns especially when i sit. also, i have started going diaherra alot and i constantly feel like i have to go even when nothing comes out. i just sit on the toliet and push trying to get some relief. i was able to look down there in a mirror and it's not red and looks okay, it doesn't look infected. i was wondering if anyone else has had this happen or if they know what the problem could be. thanks

There could be several reasons. Are you doing regular sitz baths? It's possible that the drainage is backing up and making the area sore or that an abscess is forming. I know when I get an abscess, I have a hard time going, even with loose stools. I would check with the Dr.
In the meantime do lots of sitz baths.

Hope you're ok. Good luck!

i forgot to mention that i have been checking my temperature regularly and i haven't had one but two nights ago i had night sweats bad. i thought that i would probably have a temp if it was an abcess but not sure.

The abscess is a very big possibility. I have a fistula with a drain in it now and I know that whenever I go to the bathroom it gets really sore! The more you go the longer it hurts. Try to do as many sitz bath as you can a day, at least 2-3. That is the only thing that makes me feel better. The epsom salt companies are making a killing off of me lately!

Ginger- have any of your fistulas closed on their own or have you had one for a long period of time without doing anything to fix them? The reason that I am asking is because they want to give me remicade for mine and I don't really want to start it since I want to get pregnant. It doesn't really bother me so I am considering not doing anything about it and see what happens...

Descrapster-

I have had lots of abscesses and Drs,. suspected a fistula for years-they could never find it though. Last July, it finally broke out to the skin. I had a seton in it and then a fistula plug. That closed it for about 8 months but once I started remicade, I got the fistula back. In the meantime, I had to have another drain put in because once the plug closed the fistula, 2 more abscesses busted out right next to the plugged area. IMO, don't mess with it. I went through 10 months of pain including missing 4 months of work because of all the surgeries. I wish I just took the remicade in the 1st place. So no,they have not closed on their own. I have one now that is not even closing with remicade-remicade actually caused it.

I want a baby too and my husband and I decided to just try, even if i am on remicade. No time is ever perfect for anyone-there will always be something to wait for. Is it ideal to be sporting a seton while carrying a baby? No but remicade is a class b drug and lots of women havew remicade babies. I have my OB/GYNs support and she is a high risk Dr.

If I knew then what I know now......

Best of luck!

rkilcher- Does it feel like a bruise? Night sweats could mean a fever breaking at night. Also, I have had abscesses with no fever-I don't know how but I have had my surgeon not believe me because there was no fever and 2-5 days later, I have been in his office setting up a time for surgery. Keep a close watch, soak your bum as much as you can and call the Dr. if it gets worse.

Im just curious....for craps and giggles can you see if "epifoam" which is a prescription hemerroidal foam...might help with the pain? until it heals

I used these foams with sitz baths together and they worked beautifully
