Hello,
I'm new to the forums. I was diagnosed with Crohn's when I was 16 after they drained a fistula and I just got surgery to remove the fistula once again (hopefully it will heal all the way this time). I'm an 18 year old EMT-B now working on getting to medical school.
So now that I've introduced myself and you know something about me I have a question. Have any of you heard of a pro biotic "Primal Defense"? Its by a company called ******* ** ****. Apparently the Nutritionist who made this specific product, ****** *****, cured himself of Crohn's. A friend of mine said that he read his book and it said that it talks about it.
I don't know if what he claims is true but do you think it would be worth a shot to try his product? If not, what would be another pro biotic of choice? I also want to know if I should wait on taking to Pro biotics until the surgery wound heals from the surgery I had 3 weeks ago on the fistula.

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me. Pardon any bad grammar or spelling. I grew up in Norway and went through speech therapy when I moved to the USA so I sometimes can't type English well when I'm tired.

-Nergal

Hello Nergal,

I take Primal Defense probiotic.  I started it after glancing at ****** *****'s book,(haven't read the whole thing yet) and decided it had to be the best one on the market.  My doctor says that probiotics are completely safe to take, so I don't think you can do any harm to your surgery wound by starting it.  Ask your doctor though.  Supposedly they just help with digestion by keeping the good and bad bacteria in balance.

At first I swore that Primal Defense cured my symptoms of Crohn's, because the pains stopped within 4 days of starting it.  But my doctor believes that it was a coincidence, as my prescription medication was "kicking in" about the same time.  (I was about 6 weeks into the prescription meds.)

I have since stopped taking the Primal Defense, just to see if there is any difference, and to be honest, I can't really tell.  I think maybe it was helping a little bit, and I will probably try taking them again soon, to continue my experiment.

There is another one called Flora Q, (I think) that is supposed to be good.

Not a direct answer, but I hope it helps a little bit. :-)

I tried those, but wasn't really impressed with them. There are other Probiotics such as mentioned above that are much better. I am sure PB4 will be along soon and give you some good recommendations also. I take Digestive Advantage myself and saw more help from them than from the Primal Defense. Good Luck!

I've taken the Flora-Q in the past as well, and my dr. recommended that as a good brand.

Hopefully pb4 will come along, she has had a good experience with probotics. If not then perhaps post to her.

Nergel,

I really hope it works for you, but I do want to caution you on the use of the word "cure"  without having academic research (as in academic journals, not just some random MD).  I worked my way thru my undergrad as a paramedic so I kinda get where you are coming from.  But you should be wary of anything that claims to cure crohns.

well there is such a thing as placebo effect, but given your age I just don't want you to take anything that might harm you more... and if it works then gravy. But like I said before see if you can get ahold of pb4 she says the stuff really works for her and maybe you have her type of crohns that could benift from this.

His success story is inspiring. I think the product is worth a try.

However, when I tried it, it seemed like I improved initially, but then got much worse. I had to stop taking it. My total layman's educated guess as to why I had a bad reaction is it contains wheatgrass. If you have a sensitivity to wheat or gluten, this may not be the product for you.

Instead, I take Custom Probiotic's six strain powdered blend. I attribute much of my return to health to it. It contains acidophilous, bifidus and other strains.

Thanks for the advice Navy. I have a more mild case of crohn's so maybe that might make it more treatable with probiotics.

hopefully this PB4 you speak of gets in here soon :)

I am going to bump your post up again. I saw PB4 online lastnight, but hope she comes on today. She's usually here just about everyday.

Wow, I feel special LOL!!!

I use one called Primadophilus Reuteri made by natures way...it has guaranteed intestinal release, only one/day is needed compared to many that require 4 or more/day, it aids with vaginal health (but still fine for men to take, LOL) high cholesterol and lactose intolerance (I was severely lactose intolerance and had to use Lactaid pills, which I no longer have to now because of this probiotic) same with my cholesterol it was very high and is now in normal range and havn't had a mouth sore/ulcers or any vaginal issues since taking it...of course I take it everyday which is a must for any probiotics.

This particular brand is very affordable, the only downfall is it must be kept in the fridge but it's well worth it...

I've tried other probiotics like one made by puritans pride, it was okay but not near as effective as the primadophilus, I've also tried flora-Q but did not find it to be any better the the primadophilus and it was pricy especially when you factor in they recommend you take up to 4/day...Also the thing about the Primadophilus is it only contains a little potatoe starch, not a bunch of dyes, additives, sugar/artificial sweetners and such, these things can really interfere with the purpose of taking probiotics especially considering sugar causes bacterial overgrowth and many with IBD are sensitive to artificial sweetners, especially sugar alcohols.

I hope this has helped :)

Thank you...it's very therapeutic for me if I'm able to help others that suffer with this DD.

Cool, I'll look into Primadophilus Reuteri. Have you tried Primal Defense though? I'm just wondering if its a scam product or not.

to make a long story short, i did the makers diet. it worked. i met jordan rubin (he is in top physical shape and says he has been symptom free for years). he put me on an extreme version of the makers diet. i got even better. i take his probiotic. primal defense ultra has an extra strain in that primal defense does not have (hence there are two version) and the delivery system is different. i feel probiotics are definitely a supplement every one, crohn's or not, should be taking. is it working for me? i dont know. i started it the same time as the maker's diet. but i am sure it has a positive effect on my body. i have also used Th1-s. i felt i got a better result with this probiotic, but it is not a maintenance probiotic since it has a strain in it that induces an effect similar to remicade. so good for short term use, not long term maintenance since there is some immunosuppression going on (or so i've been told).

this rubin character uses all the supplements he makes. he makes them so he can use them. he has very strict standards. he then makes them available to us through his company, GOL. no i am not affiliated with him or GOL. i dont get paid to recommend his products or the maker's diet. all i can do is tell you my experience with the diet and his products and they are all very extremely positive and i encourage everyone to change their eating habits and take some kind of supplement, be it GOL brands, the makers diet or some other diet like the specific carbohydrate diet. this stuff works. research it on your own and make a decision that is right for you. there are many brands out there and diet plans to choose from. feel free to pick my brain for my experiences. i am here to help, not get paid. i do this stuff for free cos of the monumentous change it has made in my life and i feel it can do the same with everyone.

if you have any GOL supplement questions or about the makers diet email me. i'll be happy to answer them all. i firmly believe in all this stuff. it makes total sense. jordan rubin is a success story to me and so far in the last year i seem to following in his footsteps. you should be able to see what past threads i've started by looking at my user name here. if so, you'll find a few threads on my journey over the last year how i went from about to have a colectomy and permanent ostomy to best health ever by doing the maker's diet.

best of luck!

Over-priced rip-off. This Ruben fella has been jumped on by the FDA more than once for his false claims. I may be wrong but at one time his product or one of them was Molecure or Molocure, something like that.

Probiotics can be good. Just read the "claims" carefully. If it sounds too good to be true - it is. I've taken probiotics on and off for years. We used just acidophilus powder years ago to save fading puppies.

Many pharmacies carry several brands of probiotics and it may be worth your while to ask your pharamacist about the ones he sells and why.

As PB4 suggested check the inert ingredients as well as the various active ingredients.
