While busily working at my desk chewing gum, I coughed and swallowed the whole thing. I didn't really think much of it, but eventually got to thinking about the old wive's tales about it not being digestable and staying in your stomach for a long time...

Anyway, it finally hit me that my TI is so scarred that my doctor can't see through it on a scope so there is NO WAY this gum will pass through there too. I looked it up quickly and read that swallowed gum passes through for normal people.

Am I at risk for another blockage now? Anything I can do to help it pass (go on liquids, eat fiber, I have no idea...)? Am I just being paranoid? Lastly, any idea how long until I know I am in the clear?

I'm kicking myself because I have been in remission a couple years and my GI never thought I would be because the strictures are the worst he's seen. I really hope I didn't just blow it.

Thanks all!

I don't think gum should be that big of a problem. Remember it can change shapes, so I am sure it could fit thru a thin area.

I am sure the gum will go down the hatch! Please try not to stress too much about this, since stress can cause you to flare. So like the song goes: Don't worry, be happy!

I was having conversation in the kitchen a few months ago with my son whilst munching on some Grapes, I was actually chewing them up really well and once they became pulped I'd kind of spit them out into the compost bowl, (very ladylike, I know but this was in my kitchen), anyhow I got distracted and swallowed, I was mortified thinking how I'd be able to get a load of seeds and thick skin past all my gut problems, remembering the past two trips to ER needles pain etc I went to the bathroom shoved my fingers as far fown my throat as I could and solved what would have become a problem for me.

GK- I actually thought of doing that but I was at work and our bathrooms just aren't private enough. I was too concerned that people who already wonder why I am skinny would start to think they knew why...

GAcrohns-- hope we both come through. I figure after about 8 hours we should have an idea about whether it will pass. I just keep seeing the picture of my scarred ilieum and I cannot see how the gum will fit through. It HAS to though, I don't want to consider the alternative.

You are right, normal people would think we are nuts to worry about this. I laughed at myself first then thought of th CD consequences.
