I've been feeling pretty good overall, and I'd almost say I'm in remission except for one recurring problem. I can go sometimes 12-18 hrs or more between BM's (which in this crowd is pretty good). Then I'll have a few solid, thin (width of finger), stools, but I feel like I'm not done. I'll go several more times over the next few hours, sometimes with great urgency, and they are less and less solid or D. But after I "get it all out" over a few hours, I feel good again until the cycle starts again. I don't have pains or cramping, but after the few hours I am spent and just need to lie down.

When I haven't had a BM all day I get worried because I just know the longer it builds up, the worse it's going to be later. And I can never seem to predict when it'll start. I assume this is caused by scarring and narrowing of the bowel. I have had CD for 18 yrs and a lot of inflammation for long stretches, and my doctor said there is scarring.

What can I do to manage this? More fiber? I generally avoid it though not completely. Should I take something to stop it from "building up", like a softener? Is surgery in my future?

Hi Dave,
I would stop the fiber and see how your bowl movements are.

Maybe you might try something like Metamucil or Benefiber.  Maybe that would help to regulate you a little more.  JMHO

I have strictures so things are more slow moving for me. When I start having pencil thin bowel movements I know things are not good. I also get lots of pain , lots of gas , loss of appetite, nausea. Bulking up on fiber just makes things worse for me. I usually try to drink way more liquids, and change my diet to a less "bulky" one....no vegetables , a little fruit, rice, ....I avoid anything with pits or seeds , that can lead to complete blockage. Sometimes my stool are very light brown, almost white on one side of the "pencil" and black on the other side...right down the middle. It's very odd. "
Anyway...good luck my friend. Trying to manage our crohns disease is one full time job for all of us I'm afraid.

I had to laugh a little at these responses :-) One suggests no fiber, the other suggests adding fiber. It just goes to show managing CD is still very much guesswork (even for doctors), and everyone's disease is different.

Thanks for the replies.
