Hello all,

Recently my GI placed me on iron pills due to my bloodwork results.  In the past I had to use Slow-Fe the slow release iron due to C.  Since my surgeries C has not been my issue.  The frequency I am having D/loose BMs has gone down.  The BMs dont have that urgency but I feel really bloated until I go and sometimes I have to push like I am C but all loose stool comes out.  The first BM of the day seems to take the most effort.  After dinner I feel the worst bloat wise, I tend not to have another BM until the next day either late morning or early afternoon.  I even took a total of 2 colace (the ones with the laxative since my cramping was so bad last night) and only went 2 times after that (I had been going 3 times a day or more).  I understand the frequency that I go may lessen but how do I get rid of this bloated feeling?  As of tonight I just rmoved my last fentanyl patch, I have used a few dilaudid in the past 2 days.

My meds are as follows

Pentasa 3g/day                                   Diladid (prn)

Neurontin 3 pills /day                            Singulair 10mg/day (bedtime)

Prenatal vitamin (in the am)                   Amatryptaline(sp?) 75mg (bedtime)

Vitamin B6 (in am)                                Tizanadine 8mg (bedtime)

Zinc (in am)                                        Benadryl 50mg (bedtime plus prn @ daytime)

Iron 65mg (in am)

Birth Control (bedtime)

Asmanex (bedtime)

Tylenol PM (prn...yeah I know its benadryl that makes u sleep )

Metamucil capsules (I had been taking one, 2 days ago I changed it to 2 at bedtime...could

that be my problem? prior to surgery I was taking 5 at bedtime)

let me solve your problem (or at least try to based on my own experience).

i too have been hit by anemia. my hemoglobin got down to 7. this was so bad i could not function (i'd pass out if i stood or sit up for more than a minute) so i got a transfusion of 2 units of blood on july 11. my hem went up to 9 something. i am taking an iron supplement also. it is from grass fed buffalo liver that has been dessicated. go to carlson labs on the web to get it. i take 6 a day. with shipping it is like $40 for a month supply. it does not constipate you like slow fe (which i have used in the distant past) and other iron supplements. oh, i had blood work done last week and my hem is 10.3. all my other blood stuff is up too. i also eat red meat cooked medium rare 3 times a week and eat lots of spinach for more iron to get my body to make more rbc's. it was recommended to me to also do chicken liver once a week but i just dont have the mental capacity for that. i did do it once and it wasnt bad. it is like sushi - all in your mind. once you break the mental barrier it is easy to eat. i just didnt get there.

as for bloating, start taking digestive enzymes. depending on what you are eating, take 1-3 with every meal. i have been doing this now for a year and i get no stomach aches or bloating. there are many many brands out there. i use omegazine by garden of life. also, I THINK (let me stress that) that if any constipation is caused by your iron supplement, by changing to what i mentioned above the bloating should go away cos you'll start going to bathroom normally. it may take a few days.

the above has been non-professional and non-medically licensed opinion.

best of luck!
