Ok... so everything would have been much much simpler, but I got a sinus infection while I was trying to determine what was going on in my gut.

Anyway, I've had pain all summer, stopped taking mesalamine for the first time in 5 years (docs think I don't have Crohn's, but an allergy to mesalamine instead), and the pain vanished. Unfortunately, 4 days later, I started taking Augmentin XR 1000mg 4/day. Kill me that stuff sucks. Around 7 days (11 days since off mesalamine) pain started kicking up again and the day after I stopped using the antiobiotic, I started havine severe diarhea. I can't distiguish this from my other flares, except that it does seem a bit more mild, but that could be because I haven't eaten in 48 hours :)

So is this antibiotic induced diarhea, IBS, or Crohns??? We were trying to figure out between the latter two until this fun issue popped up.

Anyone have any stories about antibiotic induced diarhea?

Well my son always gets diarrhea when he takes Augmentin (works wonderfully when he gets an ear infection, but tough of the tummy!). So it can be from that. However I went off of my Asacol once earlier in the year because I thought that it wasn't doing anything. Huh! LOL I went in to a flare a few weeks later, went back on the Asacol and it cleared up. So I won't go off it now! Taking it competely as directed! LOL But the doctors know I have Crohn's.

But hard to say for you, seems like your in diagnosis limbo (been there done that for many years!). So it could be any of those things! Hope you feel better, and get it all worked out!

Are you taking probiotics? They can be very helpful since antibiotics kill everything...you need to reastablish some good bacteria in your system and probiotics is the way to go....even when you are no longer taking antis for an extended period of time, taking probiotics indefinintely can be a great help for IBDers and IBSers.

I use Primadophilus Reuteri myself, with great success.

Ditto with the advise from PB4 & Jen77. Always also consider eating a good cultured brand of yogurt when on heavy antibiotics. Good bacteria is ALWAYS a plus whether you have CD or not!

Yes the antibiotics can do a number on your gut. I just started on anitbiotics for an upper respitory infection yesterday, today I'm sick as a dog. Nausea, D and just feel like crap. I knew I was going to need the anitbiotics when I got the cold a week ago so I started eating yogurt (hate the stuff) but even that didn'y do the trick. I guess I'll try to eat more yogurt and take some more probiotics if I can keep them all down. but first I'm taking the anit nausea meds.

Hi there,

I just started taking Apo Amoxi-Clav (antibiotic) this week for a root canal.  Boo.  When I first started taking it I was always on the run to the bathroom.  A couple days in and it's eased off a bit.  I told my doctor and she said that diarrhea was common and although  but if the was any blood in the stool I needed to get a bacteria (c. difficil?) test done immediately.  She even wrote out a requistion form and left it in my file so that I could just call the office and have the form sent to the lab super fast.  I don't think you should stop taking them... That's dangerous with an antibiotic (so I'm told).

I'm also taking probiotics (when I remember!!) 2 hours after I take the antibiotic.  I hope this info helps you.

Yeah I am praying that what I feel right now is all antibiotic induced. Its been 3 days since I stopped the antibiotic and the diarhea is gone but now I have HORRIBLE abdominal pain. Doctor says he needs a spool specimen but I can't produce one!!! This is very very strange.

I was taking probiotics while on the antibiotic and they seemed to help... I didn't start having pain until I missed a few doses while taking it :( That was dumb. Anyway, I hope that this will clear up in a few days! Doc says I won't know for sure until 2 weeks have passed without D. Apparently it can take that long for the flora to reorganize!
