Just wondering if IBD can cause narrow or deformed stools.

You are not alone!!!!!

Is this something new? If it is, you might want to call your dr, because more than likely you have active inflammation.

I get this on and off, sometimes in the same bowel movement I would have perfectly formed stool and thin/deformed stool at the same time! I totally don't understand this.

I am getting the scope in a few days.. Will update soon.

Yep, Scinny, pencil thin dark stools or sometimes they look like an i , the stick and then the tiny-teeny little dot.
Boy,when I try to explain to my family what my poop looks like they all tell me "Mom, Go away!we don't want to know that stuff!!"
Isn't it wonderful to have THIS family to turn to when our poops are deformed, looking funky or particularly stinky!!LOL

some of us have been calling this "playdoh poop" for years, cause it looks like it came out of a platdoh machine... no one has really come up with a "final" answer on what causes it, but some good guesses have been strictures, inflamation, spasms and others that i cant recall. ask your dr at your scope and let us know what he/she thinks

Randy!   It DOES look like Playdoh that is pressed out of those machines!   I just assumed everyone with Crohn's had it.  I also assumed it was that your anus or lower intestines are narrowed from years of inflamation so that is just how it comes out.    OR later I thought maybe because it is a soft-solid, your anus forms it like that on the way out - like the playdoh toy.  yeah

My doctor calls them ribbon stools or pencil stools (because sometimes they are the width of a pencil)It is very common and in the absence of a stricture or active inflammation can be caused by a spasm, so that you can have a perfectly normal BM (a WHAT??) and then have the skinny "playdough poop" right after it>

Dang, Randy! You got it! I was referring it to a certain food we all love but I won't go there for fear of ruining it for everyone. The play-doh comparison is perfect! Now I know how to describe it to the GI. In case you haven't figured it out yet, this is how my poop looks! Yeah, like anyone wanted to know. LOL! Although, sometimes I get the skinny, pencil ones. I always attribute it to the stricture......

I have pencil like stool and sometime they are flat .

sometime when I go to the bathroom I have multiple shape of BM and finish with d .

I like the playdough poop , I will use it when I see my GI next time.

Oh god.. I'm sure my doctor would be thrilled to see what comes out of me..

Anyway I just got back from the scope...

I have mild nodular proctitis and moderately severe gastritis in the entire stomach. Biopsies taken.

They have prescribed hydrocortison suppository for now.

So I guess the funky shaped stools was actually caused by inflammation.
