I am new to the forum. I have been suffering untreated with this for the last year as they thought I had a bacterial infection in my intestines that was causing the diarrhea.  Come to find out it was Crohn's all along!  I have been on the pentasa and entocort for 2 wks now with no sign of relief of diarrhea.  How long does this take to see some of the diarrhea going away. I am only going 4-6 times a day but alot of volume.  I am also trying to figure out the difference between the asacol and pentasa.  I have narrowing of the terminal ileum so I am hoping this does the trick!

Thanks!

Hi Nikki.  I have not taken Entocort myself, but I would think that 2 weeks is a reasonable amount of time to try it out before calling the doctor and asking some questions.  Have you made any progress at all?  You stated that you are at 4-6 bm's a day now, is that an improvement from where you were?  If it is, then take a breath, and try to be happy for that at least. :)

Asacol and Pentasa are the same medication really, but they are released into your system differently.  The coating of Asacol is broken down and the med is released in the large intestine.  I have Crohn's only affecting that area, so Asacol is all that I need.  Pentasa breaks down earlier in the system.  (I honestly don't know when or where)  I would guess that since your TI if affected, that's why you were given Pentasa instead of Asacol.

I would not hesitate to call your doctor and ask about the meds, if a dose adjustment may help, and how much difference you should expect to see so soon.

Hi Nikki,  I have narrowing in the terminal ileum also, and I'm also on Entocort and Pentasa (called Salofalk here in Greece).  I have been on Entocort for two months, and although it helps me, I still have my bad diarrhea days, the difference is that it's not everyday.  Entocort takes 2-4 weeks to fully work.  Prednisolone is much more effective, but also has much more side-effects.  Keep in mind, that you also have to watch your diet, otherwise the medicines alone won't do the trick.

Avoid seeds, rough fiber, raw vegetables and raw fruits.  These foods always cause me diarrhea, no matter what medication I take.

Oh! and try to avoid stress.  Stress always sends me to the bathroom right away!!!

HI Nikki, welcome to HW.I have not used entocort, but have been on pentasa for about 3.5 years. It took 2-3 months after starting the pentasa for the big D to settle down for me.I still get it occasionally, but usually from poor food choices or high stress.I hope that you feel better soon, take care!

Hi Nikki.

You could ask for Lomotil. Essentially it is a prescription immodium AD. Take 2 every time you take your meds or more if needed (they are tiny pills).
