Hi all,

Well in my other post I said my abdomen was tender to the slightest touch.  I also noted that the area where I had a localized infection before due to a piece of suture remaining since it grew in is the area that was painful.

I looked at the area while in the bathroom and saw the same area was swollen, red and gave off heat.  Some of the skin was also purplish, which it was before and the doc was able to break that skin away by placing a q tip in the hole that it left and rolling it downward to open the area up more.

When noticing the area was swollen (it also has lots of dry skin) I was scratching and peeling the dry skin off.  One area started to seep a thin yellow liquid.  After my shower I gently pulled at the sides to try and open the area so that it could drain.  It worked.  The pus was so foul odored that I nearly gagged and I have a strong stomach when it comes to bad odors.  I was able to gently squeeze the area and got about 10cc of pus out.  It was a greenish brown with blood mixed in.  I had a sterile qtip and used that to open the area up a little more like my doc did before but not as open as he got it before.  I was able to get some of a gauze pad in the hole since that was what the doc reccomended before.

I still plan on going to the office tomorrow and seeing one of the covering docs since mine is on vacation.  Maybe this time rather than just packing gauze in they will also place me on ABs.  It was fully healed by Sept 4th, it popped before on july 22.  I start my new job in a week I cant call out on my first day....hopefully there isnt a bigger abscess like I had after my ostomy surgeries where I would need a drain.

For those with drains, did you have to stay overnight at the hospital or were you able to return to your normal life immediately following?

This would be another localized infection I think more so than they type of abscess I had before but I am not a doc so I cant tell that for sure

Hi How big is that hole? Hope it isn't a fistula but it is good your going to the Dr. tomorrow to get it checked. I had a fistula come to the surface after my abd. surgery and it wouldn't heal until around my third IV of Rem. I am glad you are going to try and get Hum. maybe that will heal it. Probably good to get your antibotics done before you start the Hum. Hope your temp. goes down and keep in touch on what your DR. says tomorrow .If you get too much worse head for the hos. they might want to check your blood work. Gee sure hope this will be the end of your problems with that but sometimes it takes time took me almost seven months before my surgery site finally close. Was starting to think it never would but keep it clean .lol gail

Good grief, dragonfly!  I am sure you are ready for this to be over!  I have had a drain placed in a rectal abscess.....it was all done outpatient.

Yeah the hole I was able to make with the sterile qtip is only a little larget than the widest part of the cotton on the qtip. Before my doc was able to open it about 1 inch with the qtip. I have to be able to go to work the 24th and my colorectal surgeon is on vacation :( I had a total of 6 tubes of blood taken last week. 4 were on Tuesday (the RA doc took that) and 2 on friday for the work physical. So far today I also have not had a bm, I think it is because it hurts to push due to the abscess area, I may use a suppository later if I dont go, I need to collect a sample tomorrow for the c diff test too, hopefully that will happen ealry so I can get to the occupational nurse so she can read my ppd before 10am. The surgeons office opens at 10 so I want to be able to go whenever they are able to squeeze me in.

Wow thats a lot on your plate. I hope it all gets worked out quickly and good luck with your new job. I understand the stress of not wanting to call out in the beginning.
