How do you know if its Mucuos

From what I've been told in the past year since my diagnosis, is one of the "tell tale signs" of Crohns flare is mucos with going to the bathroom. I've had "regular" and "d" every different shade and consistency of the alphabet - so how do I know if what I'm looking at is mucous? Sorry if it is gross, but my MD keeps asking me, and I can't really give a yes/no response.

I have the same problem. I have only D. So when I am done it is basically a bowl full of black/brown water. How can I tell if its mucus? Yet they all want to know. So really after almost 20 years, I still don't know how to answer the question.
