I have to complete a Fleet prep this coming Thursday. Now, I can withstand the most horrible stomach cramps from a Crohn's flare, but when it comes to drinking that horrible, salty-oily stuff, I am a total baby!

Most people I have talked to say it "is gross, but not too bad," but I truly dread it..!!

PLEASE does anyone have any "tricks" for mixing it with something to make it taste less horrible? I have tried mixing it with Gatorade, but the saltiness is what really makes me want to vomit, and Gatorade does not help mask this.

Any ideas would be welcome!!

I used to get the ginger lime fleet and mix it with Ginger Ale. It blends in well and goes down a lot easier. Are you doing the prep for surgery or another test?
Good luck,

ugh I have no suggestions. I feel your pain though.. it's terrible, awful, disgusting, and I rather cut out my own tongue then drink it.. ok that's a little dramatic.. but I feel for you anyhow.

make sure it is refrigerated and the water that is mixed with is mostly ice. Mix. then Chug. No sipping only makes it worse. The temperature helps you to not taste that Satan's milk. But chug it like a bottle of water after a 15 mile run. Believe me, it does help....just a little

Very easy....pour only 1/3 of the 45 ml bottle into a full glass of CLEAR cold pop, do this 3 times in total to get the entire 45 ml bottle down, you can add won't hardly taste a thing with only 1/3 of it in a full glass.

I prefer the unflavored version as opposed to the lemon ginger one. It has less of a taste to it. As was mentioned above, the colder it is, the less you'll taste. Back when I was a kid, I learned that if I held my breath while taking cough meds, I tasted it less. Our sense of smell can really pick up on something and make the taste stronger. So, no breathing = no smelling = less taste.

I mix with extra fluids anyway to try and avoid dehydration, so that allows me a smaller "shot" in the 7Up or whichever beverage I choose to mix it with.

You can mix the fleet with apple juice.

Thanks, everyone!

I never thought of mixing it with ginger ale or apple juice--that sounds like it would really help to kill the taste a good bit--what good ideas!

pb4--I am with you, I think I can handle it best if I break it up into thirds as you said. For some reason, it being cold does not seem help me much, also, if I try to chug it I almost throw up...! But I am excited to try mixing it with sweet things...

Oh, and Cecelia, I am doing this as a prep for a barium enema; however, this barium enema is only being done so that my surgeons can see what is going on in my colon (they think, and I think, that I have a strictured area that is causing me much pain, and I am scheduled to have resection surgery in the next 2 weeks).

I know that my surgeons once again will propose that I have a complete ileostomy and move on with my life (that is why I have been lurking around the Ostomies board as of late)...but if I only have 1-2 small strictured areas, I am just going to opt for the resection at this time. I am only 26, and have read about great results from resections here (although few people have had colon resections--most get the small bowel resectioned). Thanks for asking, though. :)

Have a wonderful day, everyone. :-) :-) :-)

My daughter refused to drink the prep......Ask your GI for the osmoprep....
you take 32 pills but it sure beats that nasty taste....and it worked just
as well.....
Good Luck!

God Bless

the only thing I recommend is not mixing it with something you usually like to drink all the time. I mixed mine with 7-up and couldn't drink 7-up for 6 months after lol

Consideringabag :)

Glad you will be taking it 1/3 at a time, this way it really won't turn you off of whatever you choose to drink it with because you'll hardly (if at all) taste a thing, other then water of course so don't mix it with water...but drink plenty of water once you've gotten all the fleet down.

I like the shot glass approach, treat the fleet like a stiff drink, i just shoot it back and chase it with something really sweet like super-concentrated gatorade :)

I mix it with gingerale. I wouldn't mix it with anything I like to drink on a regular basis.

it might be too late but you might want to ask the dr for something for nausea before you take it.

I tried to drink that stuff and projectile vomited.  My coworkers (RN's) suggested next time I do it to ask for that (ie phenergan --there's others too) and it may make it stay down.

Good luck!  =0)

after vomiting many versions of the drinks, fleet, golytely, citrate mixed with pop and other drinks I was exstatic to find out about visacol tablets. You take 28 of them in a short period of time. You take 4 every 15 minutes with 8 ounces of clear liqiuds till all 28 are in you. when it first came out it was 40 pills and they all had to be followed with ginger ale...needless to say that much ginger ale...ugh cant drink it for pleasure any more and even 1 sip of srite and I get nauseus and begin the I am going to puke salivation from mixing the citrate of magnesia with spirte.

I'm late to this party (as usual), and I know you've already had your procedure, but just in case this might do someone else some good...

My GI recommended white cranberry juice. Not the red stuff, the clear stuff. I stuck the phospho-soda container in a 32 oz cup filled with water and ice. I left it there until it was ice cold. I then mixed the entire bottle of phospho-soda with 12 oz of very cold white cranberry juice. Take a deep breath, and chug the whole thing down in one breath. Follow up with more cranberry juice or (what I used) Gatorade Ice. Made the whole process relatively painless.
