Hi I had IBS for 27 years before CD DX but how long the CD was there I don't know. Should of had testing done before I did so I think when a person has IBS they shoud get tested every so often. I guess I didn't think that it would lead to CD .lol gail

I was diagnoised w/ IBS by a physicians assistant, but the diagnosis was changed -- they knew w/in a few weeks something else was wrong but it took another 6 months before I got a solid diagnoisis...
Living with Crohns for 1 year. I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful little girls.
One blessing that came with my Crohns: I thank God for each day that I can get out of bed and take care of my girls and my home.

I was like Gail. IBS for 30 years and then last year I had a fistula go to my bladder. I found out I had Crohn's when the docs went in to repair. I have no idea when it developed into Crohn's. Things did start to change about 5-8 years ago though.

I was first dx with IBS that went on for two years and none of the meds helped. I went thru three GI'S and kept on getting sicker till i finally had a colonoscopy done and at that time was dx with crohns. I began meds for crohns and started feeling better. I believe i had crohns for quite awhile before the right dx.

Was never diagnosed with IBS, and believe me they tried to diagnose me with just about everything but CD. Looking back, it's funny they never did.
49 years old, CD since I was a child.
Six resection surgeries, permanent ostomy, adverse reactions to Remicade finally off of Prednisone, back on 6MP for maintenance, hoping for a long remission from this last surgery.

I was told it was just IBS and acid reflux and ovarian cysts from age 13 to 23. I moved, got a new doctor, and a crohns diagnosis!! My health had gotten a lot worse though too. I was diagnosed by a promesthus test as well as some unspecific areas in a colonoscopy.
25 Year old married female.  Diagnosed w/ CD 2 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD.

No....I was DX immediately, afterall it was pretty obvious since at the time it was in my TI, colon, rectom and anus.

However 12ish yrs later my GI believed I then also developed IBS as well as having crohns...he said it was common especially for cases like me, constant flare in my entire time of having the disease can easily bring on an irritated bowel (disfunction).

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it!  LOL  :)

I was diagnosed with IBS about 4 years before my doc discovered I had CD. Don't know if it was CD all along and misdiagnosed as IBS or had IBS which turned into CD. I don't think it's uncommon though to have IBS turn into CD.

My diagnosis started off pretty interestingly..
I went to an urgent care place here in town because I had been bleeding and had D for weeks at that time. The doctor there totally had NO idea what was going on. Of course she told me about having possible bleeding hemorrhoids, I told her that I knew what those felt like and was pretty sure that I had none. She then went on to tell me that it may be possible that I was bleeding due to having sex in the wrong end.. Which I told her that wasn't happening and the bleeding was a lot more than that would cause, she was convinced that was the reason and she obviously has a much more adventurous sex life than I do.. I was so upset when I left that appointment. I can't believe a moron like that has her medical license.
I than made an appointment with a more competent doctor and we went through the motions of ruling out infections and then I was referred to my current gastro. We thought that I had UC for a year.. until my most recent flare up that put me in the hospital for a week and the rest is history.. for now.

I diagnosed myself with IBS. My doctor on the other hand immediately knew I had Crohn's and did a number of tests to verify. No doubt once those tests came back, further more, I had surgery a month later. I had an obstruction and a perforation.

30 years ago i was diagnosed after a SBFT which was done because my gyne felt something wrong during a pelvic exam during my third pregnancy. First thought it was an ovarian cyst or tumour. Had to wait until the baby was born to have the diagnostic tests, but after the second test (first barium enema) the diagnosis was made. There was a significant string segment in the terminal ileum so easy diagnosis.

I didn't have a colonoscopy until 1998, twenty years after my original diagnosis and following my first resection.

30+ years living with Crohn's.

Thanks for your post.It means a lot to me.

I beleive each of you as a long and difficult relationship with their digestive tract.

I had so much test and i'm not accepting the IBS garbage diagnosis.
When they did my colonoscopy 8 years ago he only manage to scope less than 3 feet.
The gastroscopy also was bad because of my gagging and choking. Is it possible to get a good gastroscopy in 3-4 minutes including biopsy?!?

Yes, I was first diagnosed with IBS. It took another 8 years before I was diagnosed with Crohn's. They found it when I was admitted to the hospital with a GI bleed, when they did the colonoscopy to stop the bleeding.
Diagnosed with mild Crohn's Disease 2/06 after sever GI bleed. Has been suffering since 1998. History of rectal fistula and gallbladder removal. Currently taking Asacol and Questran.

I'm concern about my cecum hypomotility where trapped gas accumulate.

This pain irradiate my rigth side and few years ago,my knee swelled from a arthritic reaction.

FLUIDS GOT REMOVED.I still feel that it could come back.Again,i know the "infflamation" is coming from the cecum.

Recent barium enema and small bowel are normal.

I was diagnosed with IBS at age 10 and 15 yrs later with Crohns

Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength

Diagnosed with severe Crohn's colitis in May 2005. I deal with daily arthritis ALL over my body, cystic acne, & fibromyaglia. Have taken Imuran, Remicade, TPN, Colozal, Entocort, Flagyl, PamineForte, Cipro, Dicyclomine, Prednisone, Asacol, Prevacid, and the list goes on. Currently on Remicade every 4wks, 20mg Pred, Asacol, 75mg Imuran, etc.

I was told by my gyn that I probably had crohn's in 1997 and by a rheumatologist in 2004. At both of these times I had no gi symptoms other than abdominal pain and also had arthritic type symptoms. In 2004 (just after I saw the rheumatologist because of an inflammatory arthritis in my knee) a gi doctor told me I had IBS "with a rheumatological problem" despite all rheumatology tests being negative. I didn't believe it then but it took me 3 years to get up the energy to get another opinion with a new gi. He never used the term "IBS" but after a successful trial of pentasa has diagnosed me with IBD-indeterminate, probably CD of the small intestine. The reason it took me 3 years to get another opinion was that I knew I was not going to believe any doctor who told me it was IBS, so why bother? It wasn't until I had surgery in January for another problem that my gi symptoms really escalated and my primary care NP convinced me to try again with a new gi doctor.

My advice for anyone getting a diagnosis of IBS and you think otherwise ASK to try an IBD medication to see how you respond. It was the second gi doc who said he would do this but at the last minute changed his mind and called it IBS . that was what gave me the idea to ask the third doctor to try a medication specific for crohn's. What could he say besides No?
10 years, many tests, 3 gi doctors, Pentasa 1000mg 3x day
diovan, simvastatin and now lexapro

Right after I had my 2nd child which is 8 mnths now I got kindney stones. My surgeon told me that something had to have caused them and he thought it might have been when I was pregnant. But come to find out a month later I had really bad cramps and D with blood. I went to this Urgent care place and they said I needed to be admitted to the hospital for tests. They took my blood and stool and everything appeared normal, but I knew it wasn't. The hospital GI came in and told my fiance that they ruled out crohn's and I was so happy. Unfortunately, they were wrong. A colonoscopy and stomach scope showed Crohns disease. HOW HORRIBLE! and its done nothing but get worse since...........
DX: Crohns in March 2007
Meds: Remicade
