Was wondering if anyone else with CD deals with chronic ankle/feet swelling, or "cankles" as I refer to them now? (I also call them my "Fred Flintstone feet") I have had this problem for about 2 years now, my general physician did an ultrasound on my legs to try and find out why this happens to me all the time but discovered nothing detectable. He gave me an RX for Lasix, which helped for awhile but it's not helping at all anymore. By the end of the day my lower legs/ankles/feet hurt from the swelling. Do you think I should mention this problem to my GI?

I'm on Entocort and I had this problem. It comes and goes but my doctor said it was caused by the Entocort. I also had erythema nodosoum? Apparently that was causing some swelling too.

I get that all the time, especially after a day of walking or standing.  Nothing seems to make it better and I have just decided that it is part of this DD and will have to deal with it.  I give up trying to explain every little thing away when it comes to Cd because it is all very different daily it seems. mad

Marci, Your GI should be aware of ALL of your medical/physical problems and meds that you use to treat them, so definitely discuss the cankles with him. Some medications can result in fluid retention, which gravity often draws into the feet. It's also possible that you might have some vascular issues which contibute to an inability to remove the fluid. If nobody can give you an answer and the Lasix is no longer helping, perhaps it's time to seek the opinion of a vascular specialist.

Do you have ankle pain or is this only swelling? If there's real joint pain, perhaps a Rheumy might be in order. They can determine if the inflammation is related to arthritis or enthesitis (inflammation of the tendons, ligaments, synovium).

I hope you find answers and relief soon.

Maybe a little on ankles and feet but my hands have been swelling a lot. Might be the Soma I take fro  Fibro, it warns to drink a lot of water on the leaflet that came with it from the pharmacy.

Have had the ankle/feet swelling for 5 years; long before i got my dx. Still swollen after my first steroid medication.

Now much better.

Diagnosed CD June 2007. Have been on a minor prednisone medication. Did make a difference while max dosed. Got my problems back when tapering.

When I first got really sick, after about 8 months of undiagnosed illness, my ankles swelled up.  My right ankle moreso than my left.  I was on crutches for a month.  I had X-rays done but noone could say what it was.  It was finally diagnosed as arthritis as I was also having joint inflammation in other parts of my body, like my shoulder blades.

During pred withdrawl for sure, in my case. Severely so after my arthoscopic surgery in '01 ( physical therapist took care of it) enough that it resembled a snakebite.
Right NOW but not as noticable to eye, but horrible to feel. Also my hands, since my CD arthritis is in full flare. Ugggghhh!

Hi Marci,I have to agree w/Keah about the fluid retention, especially if the lasix helped some.A diet w/high sodium will make you retain more fluids, which could be the reason why the lasix doesn't help much.I was put on a very low sodium diet(2 grams per day)along w/lasix,because of fluid retention. Now I control this by diet alone, rarely do I still need the lasix.

I think that you should definitely discuss this w/your doc,& maybe keeping a close eye on sodium intake can help resolve this.I wish you lots of luck & hope that you get some relief soon.I know how uncomfortable this is for you.Take care.

Wow. I am having same problems. My right foot swells up and has for two years. Doc did tests and all was normal. There is nothing normal about This. Recently DC with crohns and will start remicade soon. Has anyone figured out if this swelling is crohns related? I'm not on any meds yet.

Hello. My ankles and legs swell every time I am lacking blood and retaining fluid. Then after a couple of days of getting filled up with a blood transfusion ( seven this year already) they go away. It is strange but at least I know before any doctor or blood test when I need a blood transfusion I just look at my ankles or legs. Good Luck, Mr. D

Interesting! I Just finished up with testing at Mayo and they said I Have crohns disease deficiency in b12 and do not know why my one foot swells up! I wish I could find a remedy. Doctors are stumped. So you are saying it is crohns related Mr. D?
