I startd pred for a flare 4 weeks ago. 40 mg daily. Super response, though not 100% symptom free.  Problem is, I cant even get down to 30 mg without return or worsening of symptoms.
Are some symptoms acceptable?
How long do people try to taper before starting another medication to help?

I wouldn't think you should stay on 40 mg. for very long due to potentially serious side effects. I stayed on pred for about 1.5 yr. at 15 mg. and less, but was able to get off eventually. I've used it since that time, but for much shorter times.

I would think that your GI should have started you on another medication already, so I would be asking him now about that. I know 6MP takes 3 to 6 months to reach effectiveness, but other medications usually take less time.

Whenever I've tapered prednisone, some symptoms have always come back even though I was taking other medications alongside. It may not be that way for everyone though.

I hope you're able to decrease and keep your disease quieted.

I was on pred for about 5 mo. most of it at 40 mgs. It wasn't until my imuran started to kick in at about 3.5 mo. that I was able to taper by 5 mg. per week. I have been off the pred for 5 mo. now and feeling pretty good.

the first time i was on it i was on 60mg for about 8 months then the taper and it took about a year to get off. this time around ive been on 40mg for 6 months and now im tapering. i go down about 5mgs a week till i get to 20mg then i go down my 2.5 mgs.  if i come down too fast i get more symptoms but i dont really remember if i had more symptoms once i was all done with it.

im slowly losing ground on the 30mg/day. I guess I'll talk with my gi about starting something else. Is Imuran always the next step?

Was anyone here able to get off a long pred course without an immunosuppressive, or without going back on pred nearly immediately?

i have not taken a predinsone in 8 months!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I however was on it a very long time
started on 60 mg for months took me a year to wean off then for like 5 years I took anywhere from 40 to 10 mgs.
I wrote to a very famous holistic doctor and explained all my health issues to him and the prednison addiction...he recommened
fresh ginger while weaning not to much but maybe 2 cups of fresh ginger a day and I SWEAR by it,
U can't take too much or it will give you a bad sinus infection...but I swear 2 months of ginger got me OFF prednison and I havn't take any since.

Good luck.
Hope you get off it soon...It casue osteo arthritis so bad that I now have to have pomindronite infusions!!!!!!!!

Many prayers your way

I'm tapering the same way bunnypucker did. I'm at 30mg now and going down 5mg til I hit 20mg, then 2.5mg week, so I should be off it by early Jan if all goes well. I started off at 50mg early oct, then went to 40mg, then down by 5mg every week. You should be on another drug while your tapering tho as that will induce remission hopefully. I was put on Imuran, i'm on day 2, no issues so far :)

Best wishes and hope you can get off pred, it's horrible and we all can agree on that! :P
