Hi all,
I just started Flagyl yesterday.  Im taking 500mg 3 times a day.  I know alcohol is very dangerous with this so i have 2 questions.
1. I normally eat these protein bars that have sugar alcohol in them.  Does anyone know if that would have the same effect as alcohol?  They have 18grams of it.
2. I have a big getway weekend planned with lots of neighbors.  Were going to a resort for the weekend.  I want to be able to drink in the hot tub and have a good time!  Could i take the flagyl thru Tuesday, then drink a few this weekend and start the Flagyl again Sunday?  Im not a drunk, i just have been looking forward to this weekend and havent had many good times lately due to being sick.
3. How long does one usually stay on Flagyl in general?

Sugar alcohol does not have the same effect as alcohol, it's regular sugar manufactured with hydrogen molecules...but as little as one gram of sugar alcohol can cause diarrhea, cramps, gas and bloating so it should be avoided (anything ending in "tol" is a sugar alcohol, sorbitol, lactitiol, mannitol, malitol and xylitol).

Drinking while taking flagyl is sure to make you vomit, that's just the effect that this antibiotic has when mixed with booze, infact one should never consume alcohol while on any type of antibiotic.

My bum is broken....there's a big crack down the middle of it!  LOL  :)

Actually, from what my doc told me you should not have any alcohol for about 3 days after your last dose of Flagyl as it takes that long to completely leave your system. If you drink within that time, you run the risk of severe vomiting. I was on Flagyl for 6 months which meant no alcohol for my birthday or New Years Eve! I didn't even bother with a sip of alcohol as from what I've been told, it's just not worth it. Non-stop, violent vomiting just didn't seem like an appealing way of celebrating.

By the way, Flagyl works just like any other antibiotic. It needs to be taken continuously for the prescribed amount of time or it doesn't work.  If you miss more than one dose, you may have to start from scratch. Some people are on it for a few weeks while others need to take it for months. Talk to your doc about it.

Sorry to be such a party pooper! I think we all know what it's like to want to be "normal"; especially after a flare up. Only you can decide if it's worth it for you. I hope you are able to have a great weekend regardless of what you end up deciding! :)

I definitely would not discontinue the flagyl.  And I definitely NOT drink while taking it.  And personally, I try to stay away from sugar alcohols.

No one had warned me about the effects of flagyl and alcohol when I had a drink the the first day I started the med.  I didn't vomit, but I thought I was going to die.  I felt that way for two whole days.  For me flagyl is a wonder drug if taken as directed.   I hope it works for you, too!

You have only taken it for a day, so why don't you stop, and just start it when you get back?
