Hi ,going in to hospital next Wednesday for resection surgery as i have an abdominal wall fistula.Am glad as i have waited so long for this ,and am hoping to get my life back again, but am very nervous.

Once i start eating after the surgery are there foods i should avoid to help with the healing.

Have had most things explained to me ,but not this.

Would appreciate any advice!

Eat lots of protein to help you heal, as far as what to avoid, they'll start you off on liquids, then , soft, and change you up until you can tolerate any foods (as long as you don't have active disease or narrowing inside).

I had a resection two weeks ago for the same thing. It's good if they are able to do it laparoscopically as this will lessen your recovery time and pain. I saw the surgeon yesterday, he took out the staples, and cleared me to go back to work already. The largest incision from the laparoscopy is only 6 cm.

He didn't say there was any foods I should avoid but I'm basically staying on a soft, low-residue diet. The only problem is that my bm's have not returned to normal. I'm still having diarrhea and loose stools. I see the GI next Monday.

Thanks, good luck to you. The worst part is the 2-3 days immediately following the surgery, but you'll most likely have something like a "morphine pump" to help get through that time. The pain wasn't excruciating for me but I also used the morphine to help forget about eating.
